Assad regime collapsing, ex prime minister says

At a press conference in Amman (Jordan), Hijab said the government is in control of only 30 per cent of the territory. He calls on Syrian political leaders and officials to break away from the regime. Assad's special envoy is in Beijing to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

Beijing (AsiaNews/ Agencies) - The "regime is collapsing [. . .]. Militarily it is crumbling as it no longer occupies more than 30 per cent of Syrian territory," said Riad Hijab, a former Syrian prime minister who fled, at a press conference in Amman, Jordan. Its fall is a matter of weeks. Morally, materially and economically, the system has imploded. The ex premier urged the opposition to set up a united front to build a new Syria, and called on the military to stop slaughtering civilians. He said he will join the rebels and wants Assad supporters to break away from the regime.

Hijab, who fled last week, is the highest ranking official from the Assad regime to defect and to call for his removal. He is not the only top official to do so. Syrian Republic Guard Brigadier General Manaf Tlass, one of Assad's top military advisers, and Nawaf al-Faes, Syrian ambassador to Iraq, have also defected.

Hijab's statement comes as Syrian President's special envoy Bouthaina Shaaban met Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Beijing. His visit, which is meant to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict and revive the Annan plan, has also rekindled the debate over China's support for the current Syrian government, a position criticised by the European Union, the United States and the Arab League, which back the opposition, financially and otherwise.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Qin Gang said yesterday that the meeting with Bouthaina was part of Beijing's diplomatic effort to mediate between rebels and the regime. The latter includes a future meeting with rebel representatives to negotiate an immediate ceasefire.

In 17 months of war, China and Russia have vetoed three UN Security Council's resolutions in order to prevent any anti-Assad measure from being taken.

Meanwhile, fighting continues in Aleppo as rebels claim to have shot down a Syrian fighter plane, producing footage of a man they say was the captured pilot.

Since violence broke out, some 20,000 people have died and 2 million civilians have been caught in the crossfire. About a million have been made homeless. About 140,000 Syrian refugees have crossed into Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq.

UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos is in Damascus today to assess ways to increase the flow of emergency aid. She is expected to ask rebels and government for a humanitarian corridor to help civilians.

She should meet Syria's new prime minister, Wail al-Halqi, Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, and his deputy Faisal Meqdad.

Ex Premier siriano: Il regime di Assad è al collasso

In una conferenza stampa ad Amman (Giordania) Hijab sostiene che il governo controlla ormai solo il 30% del territorio. L'invito a tutti i politici e funzionari siriani di rompere con il regime. Inviata speciale di Assad visita Pechino per cercare una strada diplomatica alla fine del conflitto.

Pechino (AsiaNews/ Agenzie) - "Il regime è al collasso. Assad controlla ormai meno del 30% del suo territorio". E' quanto dichiara Riad Hijab, ex premier siriano fuggito all'estero, in una conferenza stampa tenuta oggi ad Amman. Secondo lui la fine del regime è questione di settimane. Tutto l'establishment è crollato dal punto di vista morale, militare ed economico. Egli chiede all'opposizione di creare un fronte unito per ricostruire una nuova Siria e implora  i militari di fermare la carneficina di civili. Hijab ha aggiunto che aderirà al fronte dei ribelli e invita i sostenitori di Assad a rompere con il regime.

Fuggito la scorsa settimana in Giordania, Hijab è la più alta figura di spicco del regime a girare le spalle al presidente siriano e premere per una sua uscita di scena. Fra i "disertori" vi sono Manaf Tlass, generale della guardia repubblicana fra i principali consiglieri militari Assad, e Nawaf al-Faes ambasciatore siriano a Baghdad già a servizio sotto Hafez al-Assad.

Le dichiarazioni di Hijab giungono durante l'incontro a Pechino fra Bouthaina Shaaban, inviata speciale del presidente siriano, e Yang Jiechi, ministro degli Esteri cinese. La visita serve per cercare una soluzione diplomatica al conflitto e resuscitare il defunto piano di Kofi Annan. L'incontro di oggi ha riacceso il dibattito sul sostegno della Cina al governo di Damasco, pozione criticata da Europa, Stati Uniti e Lega araba, che invece appoggiano l'opposizione anche finanziariamente.

Ieri, Qin Gang, portavoce del ministero degli esteri cinese, ha sottolineato che l'incontro con la Bouthaina fa parte di un preciso programma diplomatico lanciato dal governo di Pechino per tentare una mediazione fra ribelli e regime. Secondo il portavoce, tale piano prevede a breve anche un incontro con i rappresentati dei ribelli, per contrattare un immediato cessate il fuoco. In oltre 17 mesi di guerra civile Cina e Russia hanno posto per tre volte il veto al Consiglio di sicurezza Onu, impedendo qualsiasi risoluzione dannosa per Damasco.

Intanto continuano i combattimenti ad Aleppo, dove ieri i ribelli avrebbero abbattuto un caccia dell'esercito siriano. Per confermare i fatti, i guerriglieri hanno pubblicato un video su internet che mostra il presunto pilota del velivolo circondato da uomini armati.

Dal marzo 2011 il bilancio del conflitto è di circa 20mila morti. Secondo fonti Onu, oltre 2 milioni di civili patiscono i drammi della guerra civile. Oltre un milione sono invece gli sfollati. A tutt'oggi vi sono circa 140 mila rifugiati nei campi profughi in Libano, Giordania, Turchia e Iraq. Oggi, Valerie Amos, delegata Onu per le crisi umanitarie, è giunta a Damasco per verificare la condizione della popolazione e costringere regime e ribelli a creare un corridoio di aiuti per soccorrere i civili colpiti dalle violenze.  Nei prossimi tre giorni la Amos incontrerà diversi funzionari siriani, fra cui il neo premier Wail al-Halqi, Walid Muallem, ministro degli Esteri e il suo vice Faisal Miqdad.
