Libano, Algeria e Iraq temono un allargamento del conflitto nella regione. Il leader della Coalizione nazionale siriana chiede l'intervento armato degli Stati Uniti e della Nato.
Damasco (AsiaNews) - "La comunità internazionale invii aiuti alla popolazione siriana in fuga dalla guerra, invece di spedire armi". È quanto afferma ad AsiaNews p. Simon Faddoul, presidente di Caritas Libano. Il sacerdote non vuole rilasciare ulteriori commenti sulla recente decisione della Lega Araba di armare i ribelli del Free Syrian Army, ma preferisce soffermarsi sulla drammatica situazione dei campi profughi sul confine fra i due Paesi. "La condizione dei rifugiati è terribile - spiega - e sta peggiorando sempre di più: ormai si è perso il conto delle persone che attraversano il confine". Dei 22 membri solo Algeria, Iraq e Libano hanno espresso riserve sulla risoluzione sottolineando che la mossa potrebbe far dilagare il conflitto in tutta la regione. In una conferenza stampa avvenuta dopo il vertice, Nabil el-Arab, capo della Lega, ha però dichiarato che "il sostegno militare non significa escludere la cancellazione di una soluzione politica".

For Caritas Lebanon president Fr Simon Faddoul, the situation in refugee camps is increasingly dreadful. As the Arab League is set to arm Syrian rebels against the Assad regime, Lebanon, Algeria and Iraq fear the Syria conflict will spread to the region. The Syrian National Coalition leader calls for US and NATO armed intervention.
Damascus (AsiaNews) - "The international community should send aid for Syrians fleeing the war rather than weapons," Caritas Lebanon president Fr Simon Faddoul told AsiaNews. However, rather than make further comments about the Arab League's decision to arm the rebels in the Free Syrian Army, he prefers to talk about the tragic situation in refugee camps on the border between the two countries.

He also called for deployment of Patriot missiles on rebel bases located along the border between Turkey and Syria. Khatib, who recently submitted his resignation in protest against the inaction of the international community, urged League members to respect human rights in their own countries. He also called on the international committee to freeze the US$ 2 billion the Assad regime is said to have in foreign bank accounts. For now, Washington is hesitating about the use of missiles or a NATO intervention in Syria.

His recent trip to Israel and Palestine and especially the rapprochement between Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan and his Israeli counterpart Netanyahu are a significant step to win support in the region and play a leading role in the Syrian crisis. Although the possibility of a NATO intervention has so far been ruled out, Patriot missiles already in place on the Turkish-Syrian border for Ankara to use against Syrian air attacks could become an offensive weapon and raech targets as far as Aleppo. The idea of NATO intervention, even if only limited to rockets, could push the Assad regime to surrender.

Presidente Caritas: Invece delle armi, inviate aiuti alla popolazione siriana
Per p. Simon Faddoul, della Caritas libanese, la situazione dei campi profughi "è sempre più drammatica". La Lega Araba sostiene con le armi i ribelli siriani contro il regime di Assad. Libano, Algeria e Iraq temono un allargamento del conflitto nella regione. Il leader della Coalizione nazionale siriana chiede l'intervento armato degli Stati Uniti e della Nato.
Damasco (AsiaNews) - "La comunità internazionale invii aiuti alla popolazione siriana in fuga dalla guerra, invece di spedire armi". È quanto afferma ad AsiaNews p. Simon Faddoul, presidente di Caritas Libano. Il sacerdote non vuole rilasciare ulteriori commenti sulla recente decisione della Lega Araba di armare i ribelli del Free Syrian Army, ma preferisce soffermarsi sulla drammatica situazione dei campi profughi sul confine fra i due Paesi. "La condizione dei rifugiati è terribile - spiega - e sta peggiorando sempre di più: ormai si è perso il conto delle persone che attraversano il confine". Secondo dati Onu sarebbero ormai più di un milione. Per p. Faddoul vi è urgente necessità di aiuti e di un impegno concreto da parte di tutti i Paesi che hanno a cuore il bene della popolazione, per evitare che chi fugge dalla guerra patisca la fame e il freddo nei campi profughi.
Ieri a Doha (Qatar) i Paesi della Lega araba hanno votato per inviare armi ai ribelli siriani. Nella risoluzione finale essi affermano che ogni Stato membro "ha il diritto ad offrire qualsiasi forma di autodifesa, incluso l'invio di armi, per sostenere le ribellione del popolo siriano e il Free Syrian Army". Dei 22 membri solo Algeria, Iraq e Libano hanno espresso riserve sulla risoluzione sottolineando che la mossa potrebbe far dilagare il conflitto in tutta la regione. In una conferenza stampa avvenuta dopo il vertice, Nabil el-Arab, capo della Lega, ha però dichiarato che "il sostegno militare non significa escludere la cancellazione di una soluzione politica".
Per la prima volta dall'inizio della guerra l'opposizione ha occupato il seggio riservato alla Siria e vacante dal novembre 2011. La bandiera dei ribelli ha sostituito quella delle Repubblica siriana di Bashar al-Assad. Ahmad Motaz el-Khatib, leader dimissionario della Coalizione nazionale siriana, ha lanciato un appello agli Stati Uniti, chiedendo la realizzazione di una "No Fly zone" per difendere i civili dai bombardamenti dell'esercito, con la fornitura di missili Patriot alle basi ribelli sul confine fra Turchia e Siria. Khatib ha anche esortato tutti "i membri della Lega a rispettare i diritti umani anzitutto nei propri Paesi". Il leader, che di recente ha presentato le sue dimissioni in protesta contro l'inerzia della comunità internazionale, ha chiesto anche "il congelamento dei 2 miliardi di euro in fondi esteri del regime".
Per il momento Washington nicchia sull'impiego di missili o di un intervento Nato sul territorio siriano. Tuttavia secondo Melkulangara Bhadrakumar, ex diplomatico indiano esperto di Medio oriente e islam, la strategia del presidente Usa Obama sta cambiando. Il recente viaggio in Israele e Palestina e soprattutto il riavvicinamento fra il Premier turco Erdogan e il suo omologo israeliano Netanyahu, sono un passo significativo per guadagnare consensi nella regione e svolgere un ruolo di primo piano nella questione siriana. L'ipotesi di un intervento di truppe Nato è per ora da escludere, ma i missili Patriot posizionati sul confine fra Turchia e Siria e utilizzati da Ankara per difendersi da eventuali attacchi dell'aviazione siriana, potrebbero trasformarsi in un'arma di attacco in grado di colpire obiettivi fino ad Aleppo. L'ipotesi di un intervento dell'Alleanza atlantica, anche se solo missilistico, potrebbe essere un deterrente efficace per spingere alla resa il regime di Bashar al-Assad.

Caritas president calls for aid, not weapons to the Syrian people
For Caritas Lebanon president Fr Simon Faddoul, the situation in refugee camps is increasingly dreadful. As the Arab League is set to arm Syrian rebels against the Assad regime, Lebanon, Algeria and Iraq fear the Syria conflict will spread to the region. The Syrian National Coalition leader calls for US and NATO armed intervention.
Damascus (AsiaNews) - "The international community should send aid for Syrians fleeing the war rather than weapons," Caritas Lebanon president Fr Simon Faddoul told AsiaNews. However, rather than make further comments about the Arab League's decision to arm the rebels in the Free Syrian Army, he prefers to talk about the tragic situation in refugee camps on the border between the two countries.
"The plight of refugees is terrible," he explained, "and is getting worse." The situation is such that "We lost count of the number of people who have crossed the border." But according to UN figures, the figure now stands at more than a million.
For Fr Faddoul, there is an urgent need for aid and a real commitment by all the countries interested in the welfare of the population, to ensure that those who are fleeing from war do not suffer from hunger and cold in refugee camps.
