Parenti, amici e semplici fedeli hanno organizzato una serie di eventi e una solenne celebrazione eucaristica, in programma nella cappella privata di preghiera conosciuta col nome di Wisma Tyas Dalem (Casa del Sacro Cuore). L'edificio sorge nel villaggio di Rejoso, sotto-distretto di Jogonalan, nella reggenza di Klaten, nello Java centrale, città natale del prete. Da anni è usata per momenti di preghiera e cerimonie di inculturazione, come la messa di "Rebo Pon". Nei giorni scorsi, alla vigilia dei festeggiamenti, i fondamentalisti del Fronte di difesa islamico (Fpi) hanno però intimato a p. Utomo e ai fedeli di interrompere tutte le attività religiose in programma: essi accusano il sacerdote di usare la casa "in maniera illegale".
La "Casa del Sacro Cuore" - sotto l'amministrazione della parrocchia della Vergine Maria di Wedi - in origine era una residenza privata, di proprietà della famiglia Utomo. Negli anni il sacerdote l'ha trasformata in centro per attività "umanitarie" rivolte soprattutto ai poveri, oltre che in una "casa di preghiera" per la comunità cattolica della zona.
P. Gregorius Utomo appartiene all'arcidiocesi di Semarang - dove il suo lavoro è conosciuto e apprezzato - e per anni ha collaborato con la Conferenza episcopale indonesiana (Kwi) a Jakarta. Egli ha saputo ispirare il movimento per la tutela dei diritti dei contadini e ha promosso in prima persona la giornata dedicata dalla Chiesa all'alimentazione.

Il prelato sottolinea che si tratta di "notizie montate ad arte" da media online e giornali, per "gettare discredito" sulla figura del sacerdote. "Ho chiesto personalmente - aggiunge - ai media cattolici di valorizzare la figura di p. Gregorius Utomo e l'attività compiuta nei 50 anni di sacerdozio".

Russia, entra in vigore la legge anti-blasfemia: le critiche degli attivisti democratici

Da oggi pene e multe aumentate per chi offende il “sentimento religioso”: si rischiano fino a tre anni di detenzione e 12mila euro di sanzione. Dubbi sulla vaghezza del testo. Ma per la Chiesa russo-ortodossa si tratta di una norma "ancora troppo mite".
Mosca (AsiaNews) - Dal 1° luglio chi si macchia del reato di "offesa al sentimento religioso" in Russia rischia fino a tre anni di carcere. Il presidente Vladimir Putin ha firmato la cosiddetta "legge anti-blasfemia", con cui Mosca aumenta pene e ammende per chi insulta i sentimenti dei fedeli. L'iniziativa è stata fortemente voluta dalla Chiesa ortodossa, la quale però semba non essere soddisfatta e chiede ancora maggiore severità.
"Gli atti pubblici di manifesta mancanza di rispetto per la società e che sono volti a offendere i sentimenti religiosi dei fedeli" potrebbero essere puniti - se commessi fuori dai luoghi di culto - con multe fino a 300mila rubli (7mila euro), un anno di lavoro socialmente utile o un anno di detenzione. Se il reato viene commesso in luoghi religiosi, l'ammenda arriva fino a 500mila rubli (11.600 euro), un massimo di tre anni di lavori socialmente utili o tre anni di detenzione. Le misure sono contenute negli emendamenti all'articolo 148 del Codice penale sulla "limitazione all'esercizio del diritto di libertà di coscienza e culto".
Un'altra parte della nuova legge riguarda gli "atti deliberati di vandalismo" contro la letteratura religiosa, gli oggetti di venerazione o altri simboli religiosi. Per tale reato sono previste ammende tra i 30mila e i 50mila rubli (700-1200 euro), lavoro obbligatorio per un massimo di 120 ore per i normali cittadini e multe tra 100mila e 200mila rubli per funzionari pubblici (2.300- 4.600 euro). Viene portata, invece, dagli attuali 80mila a 300mila rubli (7mila euro) la multa massima per intralcio ad attività religiose.
La nuova norma è stata voluta con forza dal Patriarcato di Mosca dopo lo scandalo delle Pussy Riot, il gruppo punk femminista che aveva inscenato una performance anti-Putin nella cattedrale di Cristo Salvatore a Mosca l'anno scorso. Due delle ragazze che hanno partecipato alla cosiddetta "preghiera punk" stanno scontando una condanna a due anni di campo di lavoro per "teppismo motivato da odio religioso". Il caso era stato seguito da una serie di atti vandalici contro simboli religiosi, in diverse zone del Paese: dall'imbrattamento di icone, fino a croci divelte e spezzate.
Nonostante all'interno della stessa Chiesa russo-ortodossa ci siano diverse voci critiche sull'eccessiva severità della legge, l'arciprete Vsevolod Chaplin - presidente del Dipartimento sinodale per la Chiesa e la società - ha definito le nuove pene "troppo miti", dicendo che tre anni di carcere "non sono abbastanza". In un'intervista rilasciata al canale Mir-24, Chaplin ha fatto notare come le azioni che rientrano nella nuova norma "sono molto gravi" e possono portare a un vero "spargimento di sangue".
"Si tende purtroppo a reprimere piuttosto che a educare la società", hanno detto invece ad AsiaNews in precedenza fonti anonime nel Patriarcato di Mosca. Tra gli attivisti per i diritti umani, inoltre, si teme che in nome del sentimento religioso si finiscano per censurare anche voci critiche della Chiesa e dei suoi rapporti troppo stretti col potere politico. Anche il Consiglio presidenziale per i diritti umani aveva criticato il testo dell'allora proposta di legge per la sua formulazione troppo vaga, che potrebbe provocare numerosi errori giudiziari.
Alle numerose critiche aveva risposto Mikhail Markelov - deputato del partito di maggioranza Russia Unita e altro autore del testo - snocciolando i dati di un sondaggio dell'istituto statale Vtsiom, secondo il quale l'82% dei russi è a favore dell'iniziativa legislativa.

Criticised by pro-democracy activists, Russia's anti-blasphemy law comes into effect

Anyone who offends the "religious feelings" could get hefty fines (US$ 15,000) and up to three years in prison. Doubts linger about the law's vagueness but for the Russian Orthodox Church, the new legislation is still "too mild."
Moscow (AsiaNews) - As of today, anyone "Causing offense to the feelings of religious believers" faces up to three years in prison, after President Vladimir Putin signed into law the so-called anti-blasphemy bill. Under the legislation, Moscow has increases penalties and fines for those who insult the feelings of religious believers. Although backing the law, the Russian Orthodox Church finds the legislation not harsh enough.
"Public acts that manifest patent disrespect for society and are committed with the aim of offense to the religious feelings of believers" are punishable with fines of a maximum of 300,000 roubles (US 9,000) or the offender's salary for a maximum period of two years, compulsory labour for up to one year, or a maximum prison term of one year if such acts are committed outside places of worship or other religious sites.
If the offense is committed in religious places, the fine goes up to 500,000 roubles (US$ 15,000), three years of community service and three years of imprisonment.
The measures are contained in amendments to Article 148 of the Criminal Code on "Obstruction of the Exercise of the Right of Liberty of Conscience and Religious Liberty".
Another part of the bill deals with "deliberate public acts of vandalism" against religious literature, "items of religious veneration" or religious symbols.
Such acts carry fines of 30,000 to 50,000 roubles (US$ 900 to 1,500) or compulsory labour for a period of up 120 hours for ordinary people and fines of between 100,000 and 200,000 roubles (US$ 3,000 to 6,000) for officials.
The new law would also raise the maximum fine for the obstruction of religious activities as allowed by Article 148 from 80,000 (US$ 2,500) to 300,000 roubles (US$ 9,000).
Following the Pussy Riot scandal, the Moscow Patriarchate has pushed hard for the new law. During the incident, members of the feminist punk rock band staged an anti-Putin performance in Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow last year.
Two of the women who participated in the so-called "punk prayer" are serving a two-year sentence in a labour camp for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred."
A series of acts of vandalism against religious symbols in different parts of the country followed the incident, with icons soiled and crosses torn and broken.
Although the law has been criticised within the Russian Orthodox Church for its severity, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, head of the Russian Orthodox Church's Department for the Cooperation of Church and Society, described the new penalties as "too mild," saying that three years in prison "are not enough."
In an interview with Channel Mir-24, Chaplin noted that the actions banned by the new law "are very serious" and could lead to true "bloodshed".
Earlier, anonymous sources within the Moscow Patriarchate told AsiaNews that, "Unfortunately, rather than educate society, this leads to repression,"
For their part, human rights activists are concerned that anyone who criticises the close relationship between the Church and the state might be censored to protect religious feelings.
The Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights had criticised the first draft, saying that the wording was too vague and could result in the miscarriage of justice.
One drafters of the law, Mikhail Markelov, a Duma Member for the ruling party United Russia, responded to the criticism citing recent surveys by Vtsiom State institute, according to which 82 per cent of Russians are in favour of the new law.

Jakarta (AsiaNews) - Islamic extremists are threatening to block celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Fr. Gregorius Utomo, scheduled for tomorrow, July 2. Relatives, friends and the faithful have organized a series of events and a solemn Eucharistic celebration, scheduled in the private chapel of prayer known as Wisma Tyas Dalem (House of the Sacred Heart). The building is located in the village of Rejoso, sub-district of Jogonalan, in the regency of Klaten, in central Java, the birthplace of the priest. La comunità ha organizzato una serie di eventi e una solenne celebrazione eucaristica, cui gli islamisti si oppongono. Jakarta (AsiaNews) - Minacce di estremisti islamici mettono in pericolo le celebrazioni per i 50 anni di sacerdozio di p. Gregorius Utomo, in programma domani 2 luglio. Parenti, amici e semplici fedeli hanno organizzato una serie di eventi e una solenne celebrazione eucaristica, in programma nella cappella privata di preghiera conosciuta col nome di Wisma Tyas Dalem (Casa del Sacro Cuore). L'edificio sorge nel villaggio di Rejoso, sotto-distretto di Jogonalan, nella reggenza di Klaten, nello Java centrale, città natale del prete. Da anni è usata per momenti di preghiera e cerimonie di inculturazione, come la messa di "Rebo Pon". Nei giorni scorsi, alla vigilia dei festeggiamenti, i fondamentalisti del Fronte di difesa islamico (Fpi) hanno però intimato a p. Utomo e ai fedeli di interrompere tutte le attività religiose in programma: essi accusano il sacerdote di usare la casa "in maniera illegale".
La "Casa del Sacro Cuore" - sotto l'amministrazione della parrocchia della Vergine Maria di Wedi - in origine era una residenza privata, di proprietà della famiglia Utomo. Negli anni il sacerdote l'ha trasformata in centro per attività "umanitarie" rivolte soprattutto ai poveri, oltre che in una "casa di preghiera" per la comunità cattolica della zona.
P. Gregorius Utomo appartiene all'arcidiocesi di Semarang - dove il suo lavoro è conosciuto e apprezzato - e per anni ha collaborato con la Conferenza episcopale indonesiana (Kwi) a Jakarta. Egli ha saputo ispirare il movimento per la tutela dei diritti dei contadini e ha promosso in prima persona la giornata dedicata dalla Chiesa all'alimentazione.
Alle minacce degli estremisti islamici rispondono i vertici della Chiesa indonesiana, che difendono l'operato di p. Utomo (nella foto). In una lettera personale inviata ad AsiaNews mons. Johannes Pujasumarta, arcivescovo di Semarang, respinge le accuse del fronte islamista, secondo cui i fedeli vogliono trasformare la Wisma Tyas Dalem in una casa di preghiera "permanente". Il prelato sottolinea che si tratta di "notizie montate ad arte" da media online e giornali, per "gettare discredito" sulla figura del sacerdote. "Ho chiesto personalmente - aggiunge - ai media cattolici di valorizzare la figura di p. Gregorius Utomo e l'attività compiuta nei 50 anni di sacerdozio".
L'Indonesia è la nazione musulmana più popolosa al mondo e, pur garantendo fra i principi costituzionali la libertà religiosa, è sempre più spesso teatro di attacchi e violenze contro le minoranze, siano essi cristiani, musulmani ahmadi o di altre fedi. Nella provincia di Aceh - unica nell'Arcipelago - vige la legge islamica, la Shariah, e in molte altre aree si fa sempre più radicale ed estrema la visione e l'influenza della religione musulmana nella vita dei cittadini. Inoltre, alcune norme come il permesso di costruzione - il famigerato Imb - vengono sfruttate per impedire l'edificazione o mettere i sigilli a luoghi di culto cristiani, come avviene da tempo nella reggenza di Bogor, nel West Java, contro i fedeli della Yasmin Church.

Russia, entra in vigore la legge anti-blasfemia: le critiche degli attivisti democratici

Da oggi pene e multe aumentate per chi offende il “sentimento religioso”: si rischiano fino a tre anni di detenzione e 12mila euro di sanzione. Dubbi sulla vaghezza del testo. Ma per la Chiesa russo-ortodossa si tratta di una norma "ancora troppo mite".
Mosca (AsiaNews) - Dal 1° luglio chi si macchia del reato di "offesa al sentimento religioso" in Russia rischia fino a tre anni di carcere. Il presidente Vladimir Putin ha firmato la cosiddetta "legge anti-blasfemia", con cui Mosca aumenta pene e ammende per chi insulta i sentimenti dei fedeli. L'iniziativa è stata fortemente voluta dalla Chiesa ortodossa, la quale però semba non essere soddisfatta e chiede ancora maggiore severità.
"Gli atti pubblici di manifesta mancanza di rispetto per la società e che sono volti a offendere i sentimenti religiosi dei fedeli" potrebbero essere puniti - se commessi fuori dai luoghi di culto - con multe fino a 300mila rubli (7mila euro), un anno di lavoro socialmente utile o un anno di detenzione. Se il reato viene commesso in luoghi religiosi, l'ammenda arriva fino a 500mila rubli (11.600 euro), un massimo di tre anni di lavori socialmente utili o tre anni di detenzione. Le misure sono contenute negli emendamenti all'articolo 148 del Codice penale sulla "limitazione all'esercizio del diritto di libertà di coscienza e culto".
Un'altra parte della nuova legge riguarda gli "atti deliberati di vandalismo" contro la letteratura religiosa, gli oggetti di venerazione o altri simboli religiosi. Per tale reato sono previste ammende tra i 30mila e i 50mila rubli (700-1200 euro), lavoro obbligatorio per un massimo di 120 ore per i normali cittadini e multe tra 100mila e 200mila rubli per funzionari pubblici (2.300- 4.600 euro). Viene portata, invece, dagli attuali 80mila a 300mila rubli (7mila euro) la multa massima per intralcio ad attività religiose.
La nuova norma è stata voluta con forza dal Patriarcato di Mosca dopo lo scandalo delle Pussy Riot, il gruppo punk femminista che aveva inscenato una performance anti-Putin nella cattedrale di Cristo Salvatore a Mosca l'anno scorso. Due delle ragazze che hanno partecipato alla cosiddetta "preghiera punk" stanno scontando una condanna a due anni di campo di lavoro per "teppismo motivato da odio religioso". Il caso era stato seguito da una serie di atti vandalici contro simboli religiosi, in diverse zone del Paese: dall'imbrattamento di icone, fino a croci divelte e spezzate.
Nonostante all'interno della stessa Chiesa russo-ortodossa ci siano diverse voci critiche sull'eccessiva severità della legge, l'arciprete Vsevolod Chaplin - presidente del Dipartimento sinodale per la Chiesa e la società - ha definito le nuove pene "troppo miti", dicendo che tre anni di carcere "non sono abbastanza". In un'intervista rilasciata al canale Mir-24, Chaplin ha fatto notare come le azioni che rientrano nella nuova norma "sono molto gravi" e possono portare a un vero "spargimento di sangue".
"Si tende purtroppo a reprimere piuttosto che a educare la società", hanno detto invece ad AsiaNews in precedenza fonti anonime nel Patriarcato di Mosca. Tra gli attivisti per i diritti umani, inoltre, si teme che in nome del sentimento religioso si finiscano per censurare anche voci critiche della Chiesa e dei suoi rapporti troppo stretti col potere politico. Anche il Consiglio presidenziale per i diritti umani aveva criticato il testo dell'allora proposta di legge per la sua formulazione troppo vaga, che potrebbe provocare numerosi errori giudiziari.
Alle numerose critiche aveva risposto Mikhail Markelov - deputato del partito di maggioranza Russia Unita e altro autore del testo - snocciolando i dati di un sondaggio dell'istituto statale Vtsiom, secondo il quale l'82% dei russi è a favore dell'iniziativa legislativa.

Criticised by pro-democracy activists, Russia's anti-blasphemy law comes into effect

Anyone who offends the "religious feelings" could get hefty fines (US$ 15,000) and up to three years in prison. Doubts linger about the law's vagueness but for the Russian Orthodox Church, the new legislation is still "too mild."
Moscow (AsiaNews) - As of today, anyone "Causing offense to the feelings of religious believers" faces up to three years in prison, after President Vladimir Putin signed into law the so-called anti-blasphemy bill. Under the legislation, Moscow has increases penalties and fines for those who insult the feelings of religious believers. Although backing the law, the Russian Orthodox Church finds the legislation not harsh enough.
"Public acts that manifest patent disrespect for society and are committed with the aim of offense to the religious feelings of believers" are punishable with fines of a maximum of 300,000 roubles (US 9,000) or the offender's salary for a maximum period of two years, compulsory labour for up to one year, or a maximum prison term of one year if such acts are committed outside places of worship or other religious sites.
If the offense is committed in religious places, the fine goes up to 500,000 roubles (US$ 15,000), three years of community service and three years of imprisonment.
The measures are contained in amendments to Article 148 of the Criminal Code on "Obstruction of the Exercise of the Right of Liberty of Conscience and Religious Liberty".
Another part of the bill deals with "deliberate public acts of vandalism" against religious literature, "items of religious veneration" or religious symbols.
Such acts carry fines of 30,000 to 50,000 roubles (US$ 900 to 1,500) or compulsory labour for a period of up 120 hours for ordinary people and fines of between 100,000 and 200,000 roubles (US$ 3,000 to 6,000) for officials.
The new law would also raise the maximum fine for the obstruction of religious activities as allowed by Article 148 from 80,000 (US$ 2,500) to 300,000 roubles (US$ 9,000).
Following the Pussy Riot scandal, the Moscow Patriarchate has pushed hard for the new law. During the incident, members of the feminist punk rock band staged an anti-Putin performance in Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow last year.
Two of the women who participated in the so-called "punk prayer" are serving a two-year sentence in a labour camp for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred."
A series of acts of vandalism against religious symbols in different parts of the country followed the incident, with icons soiled and crosses torn and broken.
Although the law has been criticised within the Russian Orthodox Church for its severity, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, head of the Russian Orthodox Church's Department for the Cooperation of Church and Society, described the new penalties as "too mild," saying that three years in prison "are not enough."
In an interview with Channel Mir-24, Chaplin noted that the actions banned by the new law "are very serious" and could lead to true "bloodshed".
Earlier, anonymous sources within the Moscow Patriarchate told AsiaNews that, "Unfortunately, rather than educate society, this leads to repression,"
For their part, human rights activists are concerned that anyone who criticises the close relationship between the Church and the state might be censored to protect religious feelings.
The Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights had criticised the first draft, saying that the wording was too vague and could result in the miscarriage of justice.
One drafters of the law, Mikhail Markelov, a Duma Member for the ruling party United Russia, responded to the criticism citing recent surveys by Vtsiom State institute, according to which 82 per cent of Russians are in favour of the new law.
