Jerusalem, 35 thousand pray for peace in the Holy Land

Thousands from all over the world in procession from the Mount of Olives to the Old City of Jerusalem. For the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Palm Sunday is the rejection of all violence. Number of pilgrims doubled compared to 2012.

Jerusalem (AsiaNews) - " Today, our procession is one of salvation, the Lord himself is our salvation. Jesus, the King of Peace, came to Jerusalem, a city that has never known peace", said Msgr. Fouad Twal, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem pointing out the significance of Palm Sunday celebrated this year in front of over 35 thousand faithful from all over the world. In his homily, the prelate encouraged all present to pray for the Holy Land so that this feast may represent "the rejection of all violence" and invited everyone to "let the Lord enter our hearts and our lives, to heal our wounds and our divisions, to strengthen us in our weakness and give us the courage to persevere in the midst of trials."

Last year, the Israeli police counted 15,000 people. This year, 35,000 olive branches and woven palms were displayed and raised on the procession from Bethphage through the Mount of Olives to the Old City of Jerusalem, with an imposing security system both in the air and on the ground. Despite the shift of the Easter dates in the Diocese and the number of permits (6,000 this year - only half compared to last year) issued to Palestinians by the Israeli authorities,  the crowd was dense.  Banners were held high by some parishioners, with the names of the Latin Patriarchate Parishes: Aboud, Ramallah, Jifna, Bethlehem, Beit Jala, Beit Sahour, Nablus.

From the Church of Bethphage (where Jesus mounted the donkey), the faithful began marching in droves and with joy to cries of "Hosanna."  The sun shone brightly upon this show of music and color; an international dance of drums, guitars, languages and fervor, with many wearing native Palestinian clothing.

The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Fouad Twal walked at the back of the procession with the Franciscans and the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, alongside some heads of the other Catholic Churches of the Holy Land and the Apostolic Nuncio to Israel, Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto who is also the Apostolic Delegate for the Palestinian Territories.

On Palm Sunday morning, the Patriarch presided over the Procession with Palms and the Pontifical Mass at the Altar of St. Mary Magdalene at the Holy Sepulchre. The previous night, Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Custos of the Holy Land, celebrated the Vigil of Palm Sunday in the Chapel of the Apparition and the Holy Mass at Calvary.

This year only the Catholic areas of Bethlehem and Jerusalem celebrate Easter according to the Gregorian calendar. Most of the Catholic communities in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan and Cyprus in fact follow the Julian calendar and begin Holy Week with the Orthodox Christians in the first week of May. The unification of the dates of Easter was announced on 15 October 2012 by the bishops of the Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land, where it was established that within two years all the Catholics of the diocese of the Latin Rite and the various Eastern rites will celebrate Easter according to the Julian calendar. Gerusalemme, in 35 mila pregano per la pace in Terra Santa

In migliaia da tutto il mondo in processione dal Monte degli Ulivi alla città di vecchia di Gerusalemme. Per il patriarca latino di Gerusalemme la Domenica delle Palme rappresenta il rifiuto di ogni violenza. Duplicati i pellegrini rispetto al 2012.

Gerusalemme (AsiaNews) - "Oggi la nostra processione è quella della salvezza, il Signore stesso è la nostra salvezza. Gesù, il Re della Pace, è entrato a Gerusalemme, città che non ha mai conosciuto la pace". Così mons. Fouad Twal, patriarca latino di Gerusalemme ha ricordato il significato della Domenica delle Palme celebrata quest'anno davanti a oltre 35 mila fedeli provenienti da tutto il mondo. Nella sua omelia il prelato ha incoraggiato tutti i presenti a pregare per la Terra Santa  perché questa festa "rappresenta il rifiuto di ogni violenza" e ha chiesto a ciascuno di "lasciare entrare nei nostri cuori e nelle nostre vite" il Signore affinché guarisca "le nostre ferite e le nostre divisioni, per fortificarci nelle nostre debolezze e donarci il coraggio di perseverare in mezzo alle prove".

Celebrata lo scorso 24 marzo la tradizionale processione della Domenica delle Palme  è iniziata dal Monte degli Ulivi, proseguendo fino alla città vecchia per commemorare la trionfale entrata di Gesù a Gerusalemme.

Quest'anno più del doppio dei fedeli ha partecipato all'evento. Nel 2012 le autorità  avevano contato 15 000 persone. Malgrado lo spostamento delle date di Pasqua nella diocesi - che festeggia la Settimana Santa insieme agli ortodossi - e i pochi permessi rilasciati ai pellegrini palestinesi dagli agenti israeliani (solo 6mila) i fedeli hanno partecipato numerosi portando in processione striscioni con il nome delle varie parrocchie del patriarcato latino: Aboud, Ramallah, Jifna, Betlemme, Beit Jala, Beit Sahour, Nablus e molte altre. Il cammino  è iniziato con il canto "Osanna" dalla chiesa di Betfage, dove Gesù è montato sull'asino. Come accade spesso in questa stagione il sole brillava su questo spettacolo di musica e di colori, dando risalto alle danze di tamburi, chitarre, canti in varie lingue e persone in abiti locali palestinesi. Mons. Fouad Twal ha chiuso la processione insieme ai francescani ed ai cavalieri del Santo Sepolcro, altri capi delle Chiese cattoliche di Terra Santa e del nunzio apostolico per Israele mons. Lazzarotto che è anche delegato apostolico per i Territori palestinesi.

In mattinata mons. Twal aveva presieduto al Santo Sepolcro la processione delle palme e la messa pontificale all'altare di Santa Maria Maddalena. La sera del 24 marzo, p. Giovanbattista Pizzaballa, Custode di Terra Santa, ha celebrato la messa della vigilia con un veglia nella cappella dell'Apparizione e una messa al Calvario.

Quest'anno solo i cattolici delle aree di Betlemme e Gerusalemme celebrano la Pasqua secondo il Calendario gregoriano. Gran parte delle comunità cattoliche presenti in Israele, Territori Palestinesi, Giordania e Cipro seguiranno infatti il Calendario giuliano e inizieranno la Settimana Santa insieme ai cristiani ortodossi nella prima settimana di maggio.  L'unificazione delle date delle festività pasquali è stata annunciata lo scorso 15 ottobre 2012 dall'Assemblea dei vescovi ordinari cattolici della Terra Santa, dove è stato stabilito che entro due anni tutti i cattolici delle diocesi di rito latino e dei diversi riti orientali celebreranno la Pasqua secondo il Calendario giuliano. BRICS members, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, are set to meet in Durban to discuss the creation of a new institution that could challenge the dominance of the (US-led) World Bank and the (European-led) International Monetary Fund. Experts warn it still too soon, and that "these countries must show that they can overcome the crisis".

Beijing (AsiaNews) - The BRICS group of emerging nations plans to set up a new joint bank at their annual meeting to oppose the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, deemed "Western" structures that "do not reflect changes in the modern world." A BRICS bank could start with US$ 10 billion seed money from each of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).

The project is expected tomorrow when the heads of state concerned meet in Durban, South Africa. China's new leader Xi Jinping, recently "crowned" by the National People's Congress as president of China, chose South Africa as his first trip abroad at the start of his mandate. According to analysts, it is a "clear signal" of the importance Beijing places in the group.

If emerging countries can agree, the monopoly of international aid will be removed after 70 years from the hands of the World Bank. According to an unwritten agreement, the top post in the World Bank goes to an American whilst that at the IMF goes to a European.

Together, BRICS nations account for 25 per cent of global Gross Domestic Product and 40 per cent of the world's population.

In any case, the project, as it now stands, would be dramatically scaled back from initial, more ambitious proposals made last year for funding of US$ 50 billion from each individual country.

In addition, there are differences of opinion within the group on the purpose of the new bank.

"The bank will help BRICS sustain financial risks and provide support for the development of African countries," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said.

For Oliver Stuenkel, BRICS expert at the Getulio Vargas Foundation in Sao Paulo, the development bank is in part a reaction to these countries' dimmed economic outlook.

"Now Brazil is growing at an anaemic rate, South Africa is not doing so well and India's growth is stalling, so the BRICS need to prove they can survive and prosper in challenging economic times," he explained.

China plans to push as hard as possible for a quick agreement, and the presence of Xi Jinping is evidence of that.

China's Communist Party general secretary left Tanzania today for Durban. He is scheduled to end his Africa trip in the Congo.

All these countries have strong trade relations with China, which provides investments for infrastructure in exchange for the rights to exploit energy resources.

I Paesi emergenti pensano a una banca comune contro l’Occidente
I membri del Brics – Brasile, Russia, India, Cina e Sud Africa – si riuniscono a Durban per discutere la creazione di una nuova istituzione in grado di sfidare il predominio della Banca mondiale (in mano americana) e del Fondo monetario internazionale (in mano europea). Ma gli esperti avvertono: “Ancora troppo presto, devono dimostrare che sanno sopravvivere alle crisi”.

Pechino (AsiaNews) - Le nazioni emergenti del gruppo Brics potrebbero lanciare nella loro riunione annuale una nuova banca comune da contrapporre alla Banca mondiale e al Fondo monetario internazionale, considerate strutture "occidentali" che "non riflettono i cambiamenti del mondo moderno". La banca dovrebbe partire con una donazione di 10 miliardi di dollari da parte di ogni membro del gruppo che comprende Brasile, Russia, India, Cina e Sud Africa.

Il progetto dovrebbe vedere la luce domani, quando si riuniranno a Durban i capi di Stato interessati. Il nuovo leader cinese Xi Jinping, "incoronato" dall'ultima Assemblea nazionale del popolo a presidente della Cina, ha scelto proprio il Sud Africa come primo impegno internazionale del suo mandato quinquennale. Secondo gli analisti, si tratta di un "segnale preciso" dell'importanza che Pechino riserva al gruppo.

Se i Paesi emergenti riusciranno a mettersi d'accordo, il monopolio degli aiuti internazionali sarà sfilato dopo 70 anni dalle mani della Banca mondiale. Secondo un accordo non scritto, il vertice della World Bank è nelle mani di un americano mentre quello del Fondo monetario internazionale è affidato a un europeo. I leader del Brics - che insieme formano il 25 % del Prodotto interno lordo mondiale e il 40 % della popolazione terrestre - ritengono questo accordo "squilibrato".

In ogni caso il progetto parte da una diminuzione rispetto ai 50 miliardi di dollari a testa previsti da un accordo stilato lo scorso anno. Inoltre ci sono diversità di vedute all'interno del gruppo sulle finalità della nuova banca. Secondo Ma Zhaoxu, del ministero cinese degli Esteri, il nuovo istituto "dovrà aiutare i Brics a sostenere i rischi finanziari e dare sostegno per lo sviluppo delle nazioni africane".

Tuttavia Oliver Stuenkel - della Fondazione Vargas di San Paolo - ritiene il progetto più una "stampella" per i Paesi emergenti: "Il Brasile cresce a tassi anemici e il Sud Africa non va molto meglio, mentre l'India è a uno stallo. I Brics devono provare al mondo che sono in grado di sopravvivere e prosperare anche in tempi economici non brillanti come questo".

La Cina ha comunque intenzione di spingere il più possibile per un accordo rapido, e la presenza di Xi Jinping ne è la prova. Il nuovo Segretario comunista ha visitato la Tanzania e oggi si recherà a Durban; prevista per la fine del viaggio anche una tappa in Congo. Sono tutti Paesi che hanno forti rapporti commerciali con la Cina, che fornisce fondi per le infrastrutture in cambio dei diritti di sfruttamento delle ricchezze energetiche.
