ISIS in turn, rejected any "FSA" authority and have since taken control of the town - not that Liwa al-Tahwid could have stopped them anyway. These events directly contradict the notion that the new "Army of Islam" is in any rush to disassociate, let alone be able to wage war upon the ISIS or its extremist affiliates.

An expert on international politics and blogger analyzes the new steps of the Syrian opposition increasingly divided in itself, and becoming more and more fundamentalist. The West tries to give a more "moderate" image of it. But its project is similar to that of al Qaeda.


San Diego (AsiaNews/Ich) - Recent developments regarding "rebel" groups inside Syria have shed further light on the ideologies and political aims of the militants waging war upon the Syrian state.
On the 24th September, under the moniker of the "Islamist Alliance", 11 of the largest and most recognisable rebel brigades - a mix of supposed "moderate Islamists" such as Liwa al-Tawhid, the largest "FSA"-branded brigade in Aleppo, alongside more hardline Salafi/Jihadi brigades such as Ahrar al-Sham, and Al Qaeda ideologues Jahbat al-Nusra - released a joint statement denouncing the western-backed expatriates of the "National Coalition" (NC), along with its equally impotent military arm, the "Supreme Military Council" (SMC). Following this statement of intent, on the 29th of September, up to 50 rebel groups operating primarily in the area of Damascus merged to form Jaish al-Islam (Army of Islam). The Damascus merger also included a wide-ranging demographic of militant groups, from the supposed "moderate", to overt Salafist hardliners. Jaish al-Islam is dominated by Liwa al-Islam, a large rebel group formerly of "FSA" branding, and led by Saudi-backed Zahran Alloush. Liwa al-Islam were also a signatory to the aforementioned statement of denunciation toward the western-backed political opposition.
These announcements have effectively put-to-bed the western propagated myth that was the "Free Syrian Army". Militant groups the west ostensibly touted as "secular moderates" yearning for "freedom and democracy" from a tyrannical regime; have now openly declared their Salafi/Jihadi fundamentalist ideology, with the ultimate aim of creating a Syrian state ruled by Islamic law.
Already, these announcements are being portrayed as an attempt by Saudi Arabia - yes, ever tolerant and inclusive Wahhabi-preaching Saudi Arabia - and other leading Salafi factions supporting the insurgency to steer "vetted, or moderate Salafi" rebels away from the Al Qaeda aligned groups; particularly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), who are now portrayed as simply "foreign jihadists" and have become the leading fall-guy in Western and Gulf media for every atrocity committed by the rebels. This false perception has been built as a result of a Western and Gulf initiated public relations campaign to "moderate" the image of the Salafi/Jihadi fundamentalists (as well as those more inclined to basic criminality, killing, and destruction) who may be more willing to meet the requirements of their Gulf donors and the United States. Yet, contrary to this divisive narrative, the same "moderate" Salafi's who are now supposedly being encouraged to  disassociate from their Al Qaeda affiliates have happily fought alongside - more often than not as a junior partner - the West's supposed "number one enemy" (AQ) since the insurgency began in 2011.
In further contrast to the aforementioned "Awakening" narrative, Jabhat al-Nusra (JaN) - the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda ideologues - are still very much in the mix. Although various pundits and analysts have made efforts to publicise tensions between ISIS and JaN, the two groups still share a similar Jihadist ideology and cooperate in key areas, particularly on paramilitary operations; as do the hardline Salafi groups such as Ahrar Al-Sham, who in turn fully cooperate with the western friendly "moderates" forming the backbone of Jaish al-Islam. In the recent ISIS takeover of the "FSA" held town of Azaz from the western-friendly Northern Storm brigade (of John McCain fame), Liwa al-Tahwid quickly offered to broker a ceasefire and acted as interlocutor between the two warring factions. ISIS in turn, rejected any "FSA" authority and have since taken control of the town - not that Liwa al-Tahwid could have stopped them anyway.
These events directly contradict the notion that the new "Army of Islam" is in any rush to disassociate, let alone be able to wage war upon the ISIS or its extremist affiliates. Moreover, the leader of Jaish al-Islam, Zahran Alloush, publicly disowned his own "captain" after he warned ISIS there would be open conflict if they "continued this chaos". The leader claimed that the comments were "dangerous" and designed to "cause strife between muslims".
Furthermore, in a recent interview with Al Jazeera, Alloush, free of his "moderate" chains, lets loose on his ideals for a future Syria, in which he aspires to resurrect the Umayyad Empire (2nd Islamic Caliphate with Syria at its core and Damascus as its capital), and "cleanse" Damascus of "Majous" (pejorative Arabic term for Iranians) "Rafideh" (Shi'ites) and "Nusayris" (Alawites).
Rebel leaders openly espousing sectarian rhetoric has been a running theme throughout the conflict; in line with this trend, Alloush's statement can be taken as a clear indication that his new "Jaish al-Islam" is not in the least bit concerned with abiding by a western-friendly moderate image. Alloush, like the majority of rebel leaders, is a fundamentalist Salafist, who looks on at the minorities of Syria as kafir (unbelievers) who must submit to his interpretation of Salafi Islam or be killed.
The western/Gulf media narrative surrounding this new "Islamist Alliance" is a re-hash of failed PR campaigns of the past, which attempted to mitigate the inherent fundamentalist ideologies of the insurgents waging war upon the Syrian state. In stark contrast to the Caliphate-inspired visions held by the majority of rebel leaders, Syria has been a pluralistic secular society for decades, the majority of its Sunni muslim population are conservative and have coexisted peacefully alongside the many other religions and ethnic minorities that make up Syria's diverse society, history, and culture. The people of Syria do not aspire to a Saudi sponsored Salafi/Wahhabi leadership or doctrine of law. Contrary to the popular narrative emerging in western and Gulf media that this new force will represent an indigenous "moderate Islamist" coalition capable of taking on the foreign elements and Al Qaeda, the majority of Syrians will be repelled by the sectarian language and ideologies of Zohran Alloush; his groups overt affiliations and pandering to Al Qaeda ideologues; and his "Army of Islam".
Considering the above context, the narrative of home-grown Salafis somehow being more amenable to the Syrian population than their ISIS/JaN fundamentalist colleagues becomes even less tenable. Alloush's formation of Jaish al-Islam, alongside the "Islamist Alliance" denunciation of the western-backed political opposition, show a marked shift of the insurgency further toward the Al Qaeda ideologues fighting the Syrian regime, not further away from them.

L'Esercito dell'Islam, il più grande export dell'Arabia Saudita

Un esperto di politica internazionale e blogger analizza i nuovi passi dell'opposizione siriana sempre più divisa in se stessa e soprattutto sempre più fondamentalista. L'occidente tenta di dare un'immagine "moderata" di essa. Ma il progetto è simile a quello di al Qaeda. Per gentile concessione di Ich (traduzione italiana di AsiaNews).

San Diego (AsiaNews/Ich) - Recenti sviluppi riguardo ai gruppi di "ribelli" all'interno della Siria, gettano maggior luce sulle ideologie e gli obiettivi politici dei militanti che guerreggiano contro lo Stato siriano .
Il 24 settembre scorso, sotto la sigla di "Alleanza islamista", 11 delle più grandi e riconoscibili brigate ribelli - un miscuglio di presunti " islamisti moderati " come Liwa al- Tawhid  (in Aleppo, la più grande brigata legata al Free Syrian Army, Fsa), accanto a più intransigenti brigate salafite-jihadiste quali Ahrar al- Sham, e qaediste come Jahbat al- Nusra - hanno rilasciato una dichiarazione congiunta denunciando gli espatriati siriani della "Coalizione nazionale (Nc), sostenuti dall'occidente, insieme al suo altrettanto impotente braccio militare, il "Consiglio supremo militare " (Smc) . A seguito di questa dichiarazione di intenti, il 29 di settembre, quasi 50 gruppi ribelli che operano soprattutto nell'area di di Damasco, si sono uniti  per formare il Jaish al-Islam ( Esercito dell'islam). Tale fusione comprende anche un ampio numero di gruppi militanti , dai presunti "moderati", ai palesi estremisti salafiti. Jaish al-Islam è dominato da Liwa al-Islam, un gruppo ribelle già all'interno dell'Fsa, guidati da Zahran Alloush, sostenuto dall'Arabia saudita. Liwa al-Islam è anche uno dei firmatari della suddetta dichiarazione di denuncia contro tutti gli oppositori sostenuti dall'occidente.
Tali dichiarazioni hanno distrutto il mito propagato dall'occidente su ciò che era l'"Esercito siriano libero". Il mondo occidentale aveva finora propagandato tali gruppi militanti come  dei "moderati laici" desiderosi di "libertà e democrazia" [in lotta contro] un regime tirannico. Ora questi hanno dichiarato apertamente la loro ideologia fondamentalista salafita-jihadista, che ha l'obiettivo finale di creare uno Stato siriano governato dalla legge islamica.
Queste dichiarazioni vengono ora definite come un tentativo dell'Arabia Saudita - sì, proprio la tollerante e inclusiva [sic!] Arabia Saudita con la sua predicazione wahhabita - e di altre principali fazioni salafite che sostengono l'insurrezione,  di guidare i ribelli " salafiti moderati" lontano dai gruppi allineati con Al Qaeda - in particolare lo Stato islamico in Iraq e al- Sham (Isis) - che ora sono ritratti come "jihadisti stranieri" e sono diventati il principale capro espiatorio nei media in occidente e nel Golfo, a cui attribuire ogni atrocità commessa dai ribelli. Questa falsa percezione è stata costruita grazie a una campagna di pubbliche relazioni in occidente e nel Golfo mirante a "moderare" l'immagine dei fondamentalisti salafiti-jihadisti (come pure quelli più inclini alla criminalità, all'uccisione e la distruzione), per renderli più adeguati nel soddisfare le richieste dei loro donatori del Golfo e degli Stati Uniti. Eppure, contrariamente a questo racconto, gli stessi  salafiti "moderati" - quelli che si suppone incoraggiare a dissociarsi dai loro affiliati qaedisti - hanno felicemente combattuto fianco a fianco con il "nemico numero uno"  dell'occidente [al Qaeda] e il più delle volte non come un partner casuale, ma fin dall'inizio della rivolta nel 2011.
In maggior contrasto con il citato racconto  del " risveglio", Jabhat al- Nusra ( JaN) - il ramo siriano con l'ideologia di al Qaeda - è ancora presente nel miscuglio. Anche se diversi esperti ed analisti hanno compiuto sforzi per pubblicizzare le tensioni tra Isis e JaN , i due gruppi condividono ancora una comune ideologia jihadista e cooperano in settori chiave, in particolare nelle operazioni paramilitari. É ciò che fanno i gruppi salafiti intransigenti come Ahrar al- Sham, che cooperano in pieno con i "moderati" amici dell'occidente, e nello stesso tempo formano la spina dorsale del Jaish al-Islam . Di recente l'Isis ha strappato [con la lotta] la città di  Azaz - già sotto il Fsa - dalle mani della brigata "Tempesta del Nord", vicina all'occidente. Il Liwa al- Tahwid si è subito offerto di mediare un cessate il fuoco e ha agito come mediatore tra le due fazioni in lotta. Ma a sua volta, l'Isis ha respinto qualsiasi autorità "Fsa" e da allora ha preso il controllo della città [applicando la sharia], qualcosa che Liwa al- Tahwid non avrebbe potuto impedire in alcun modo.
Questi eventi contraddicono in modo diretto l'idea che il nuovo "Esercito dell'Islam " abbia fretta di dissociarsi, o addirittura di fare la guerra contro l'Isis o gli altri estremisti affiliati. In più, il leader del Jaish al-Islam, Zahran Alloush, ha rinnegato pubblicamente il suo "capitano", dopo aver avvertito l'Isis che ci sarebbe conflitto aperto se " avessero continuato con questo caos" . Il leader ha affermato che i commenti erano "pericolosi" e potevano "causare discordia tra i musulmani".
Ancora di più, in una recente intervista con Al Jazeera, Alloush, senza le catene "moderate", ha espresso in libertà i suoi ideali per la Siria futura: egli aspira a far risorgere l'impero Omayyade (il 2 ° califfato islamico che aveva la Siria come centro e Damasco come capitale ),  e "ripulire" Damasco di tutti i  "Majous" (termine arabo peggiorativo per indicare gli iraniani), i "Rafideh" (sciiti ) e i "Nusayris" (alawiti) .
La retorica settaria dei leader ribelli è un tema ricorrente in tutto il conflitto. In linea con questa tendenza, le affermazioni di Alloush possono essere presi come una chiara indicazione che il suo nuovo "Jaish al-Islam" non è per nulla interessato a stare dentro l'immagine moderata che piace all'occidente. Alloush, come la maggior parte dei capi ribelli, è un fondamentalista salafita, che guarda le minoranze della Siria come kafir ( infedeli ) che devono sottomettersi alla sua interpretazione salafita dell'Islam o venire uccisi.

I racconti dei media occidentali e del Golfo su questa nuova "alleanza islamista" sono una ripresa delle fallite campagne di pubbliche relazioni del passato, in cui essi hanno tentato di attenuare le profonde ideologie fondamentaliste degli insorti che facevano la guerra allo Stato siriano. In netto contrasto con le visioni del Califfato, sostenute dalla maggioranza dei capi ribelli, la Siria è stata per decenni una società laica pluralista; la maggior parte della sua popolazione islamica sunnita è conservatrice e ha convissuto in modo pacifico con le molte altre religioni e minoranze etniche che compongono la ricchezza sociale, storica, culturale della Siria. Il popolo siriano non aspira a una leadership o a una dottrina legale salafita-wahabita di stampo saudita. Sui media occidentali e del Golfo, si legge che questa nuova forza rappresenta una coalizione indigena "islamica moderata" in grado di tenere a bada gli elementi stranieri e al Qaeda. In realtà è il contrario e la maggioranza dei siriani respingerebbe il linguaggio settario e l'ideologia di Zohran Alloush; i suoi gruppi di aperta alleanza con al Qaeda o con la sua ideologia; il suo "Esercito dell'Islam".
Considerando quanto detto sopra, è ancora meno sostenibile la storiella di un salafismo "locale", nato in Siria, apprezzato dalla popolazione siriana, più dell'alleanza Isis-JaN.
Di fatto, la formazione di Alloush, Jaish al-Islam,  insieme con la denuncia della "Alleanza islamista" contro l'opposizione politica filo-occidentale, mostrano un maggiore spostamento della rivolta verso gli ideologi di al Qaeda che combattono il regime siriano, non un allontanamento da loro.

Aleppo, ribelli islamici sequestrano due sacerdoti. Si teme per la loro vita

P. Michael, armeno cattolico e un religioso ortodosso sono stati rapiti lo scorso 10 febbraio nel quartiere cristiano di Aleppo. Fonti di AsiaNews denunciano gli omicidi barbari compiuti dagli estremisti islamici. Un'autobomba esplode sul valico di Cilvegozu a confine fra Turchia e Siria

Aleppo (AsiaNews) - Un gruppo di ribelli vicini agli estremisti islamici ha rapito lo scorso 10 febbraio p. Michael, armeno cattolico e un religioso ortodosso, di cui al momento è sconosciuta l'identità. Entrambi lavoravano ad Aleppo. Fonti di AsiaNews, anonime per motivi di sicurezza, raccontano che la comunità cristiana della città è molto preoccupata per questo nuovo affronto: "La violenza estremista aumenta di giorno in giorno. I miliziani islamici uccidono chiunque è sospettato di avere legami con il regime, compresi donne e bambini. Nei quartieri la gente paragona questi mesi alla conquista  ottomana di Aleppo avvenuta cinque secoli fa".

Da diverse settimane la popolazione denuncia la presenza nella città delle milizie islamiche di al-Nousra, esercito di estremisti che lotta per fare della Siria uno Stato islamico e dei quali hanno timore anche i ribelli del Free Syrian Army. Lo scorso 6 febbraio le brigate hanno fatto irruzione nel quartiere cristiano di Jdeideh, dove nel novembre scorso gli estremisti avevano distrutto la più importante chiesa evangelica della città.

Fra le milizie di al-Nousra vi sono anche molti stranieri provenienti da ogni angolo del mondo islamico compresa l'Indonesia e le Filippine. Lo conferma un comunicato diffuso su internet dai leader di Abu Sayyaf, movimento estremista islamico filippino legato ad al-Qaeda, che incitano tutti i musulmani a recarsi in Siria e a sacrificare la propria vita per l'islam.

"Questi combattenti - continuano le fonti - si nutrono di morte e violenza senza fare distinzioni fra la popolazione, agiscono senza alcuna pietà. Quando uccidono si rivolgono a Dio come se stessero facendo un sacrificio".

In tutta la Siria continuano intanto gli scontri fra esercito e i gruppi ribelli, costati fino ad ora oltre 60mila morti. Ieri sera un'autobomba ha ucciso 13 persone al confine fra Turchia e Siria. L'attentato di matrice ancora ignota è avvenuto sul lato turco del posto di blocco di Cilvegozu, a circa 100 km a nord ovest di Aleppo.
