Un altro cristiano detenuto in Eritrea è morto. Nello stesso campo militare altri 45 languono in celle sotterranee. Continua la campagna di arresti di cristiani del governo.
Porte Aperte è venuta a conoscenza della morte di un altro cristiano detenuto in Eritrea a causa della sua manifesta fede in Gesù. Belay Gebrezgi Tekabo aveva circa 30 anni ed è morto nel campo militare di Ala, situato a circa 34 km da Dekemhare, città del sudest del paese. Il reato che ha portato alla sua carcerazione? Una confusa e poco chiara accusa di “pregare e leggere la Bibbia”. La storia di questo credente è toccante e al contempo incomprensibile per il trattamento a cui è stato sottoposto.
Belay ha subito pesanti maltrattamenti durante la sua prigionia, espressamente a causa delle sue “attività religiose”. Secondo le informazioni che abbiamo raccolto sul campo, gli era stata diagnosticata la leucemia 6 mesi prima di morire, ma gli ufficiali del carcere hanno posto Belay di fronte a un bivio: firmare un documento in cui ritrattava la sua fede cristiana per poi ricevere le cure mediche presso l’ospedale di Dekemhare, oppure non firmare quel documento e non ricevere cure mediche. Un altro cristiano detenuto in Eritrea è morto. Nello stesso campo militare altri 45 languono in celle sotterranee. Continua la campagna di arresti di cristiani del governo.
Porte Aperte è venuta a conoscenza della morte di un altro cristiano detenuto in Eritrea a causa della sua manifesta fede in Gesù. Belay Gebrezgi Tekabo aveva circa 30 anni ed è morto nel campo militare di Ala, situato a circa 34 km da Dekemhare, città del sudest del paese. Il reato che ha portato alla sua carcerazione? Una confusa e poco chiara accusa di “pregare e leggere la Bibbia”. La storia di questo credente è toccante e al contempo incomprensibile per il trattamento a cui è stato sottoposto.
Belay ha subito pesanti maltrattamenti durante la sua prigionia, espressamente a causa delle sue “attività religiose”. Secondo le informazioni che abbiamo raccolto sul campo, gli era stata diagnosticata la leucemia 6 mesi prima di morire, ma gli ufficiali del carcere hanno posto Belay di fronte a un bivio: firmare un documento in cui ritrattava la sua fede cristiana per poi ricevere le cure mediche presso l’ospedale di Dekemhare, oppure non firmare quel documento e non ricevere cure mediche. Oggi sappiamo che Belay ha preferito rimanere saldo nella propria fede, pagando con la vita e puntando a qualcosa di maggiore.
Nello stesso carcere/campo militare di Ala abbiamo notizie di almeno altri 45 cristiani detenuti nelle celle sotterranee in condizioni inumane: anche loro vengono sistematicamente sottoposti a pesanti maltrattamenti a causa delle loro attività cristiane. Il 16 marzo inoltre sono stati arrestati altri 17 cristiani sempre a Keren, cittadina già nell’obiettivo delle irruzioni delle autorità governative: ad oggi non è permesso agli arrestati ricevere visite da parte dei familiari.
A quanto pare, dunque, continua l’intensa campagna di arresti di cristiani cominciata all’inizio di questo 2013. Chi ha partecipato al nostro convegno di un paio di anni fa, ricorderà Helen Berhane, sorella che è stata prigioniera in uno di questi campi, dove rinchiudono le persone in container metallici: la sua storia è raccontata nel libro Non fermerete il mio canto ed è simile a quella del fratello Belay e di tutti quei cristiani in Eritrea che decidono di non rinnegare Cristo.
