Tunisian constitution finds no place for Sharia. Published: January 20, 2014
State proclaims duty to ‘protect the sacred’, but critics say this is ‘too vague’.

Three years after the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ started in Tunisia, the country’s National Constituent Assembly is close to passing a new constitution which rejects Islam as the “main source of law”, but states it is the State’s duty to “protect the sacred”.
The new constitution, which has taken two years to conclude, comes almost three years to the day since the fall of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, itself 10 days after the death of a Tunisian vegetable seller, which began the movement that would sweep across North Africa and into the Middle East.
Tunisians were promised that their long-awaited constitution would be ready by the third anniversary.
Since the revolution of 2011, the question of whether the State would be seen as the “protector of the sacred” has caused great controversy between Ennahda, the moderate Islamist party which came to power after the first post-Ben Ali general election (and which still leads the interim government), and the broadly secular opposition.
There is no place for Sharia law in the new constitution, which has been welcomed by religious minorities and secularists. Article 6 “prohibits any form of accusation of apostasy and incitement to violence”, while the Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings are both rejected as “sources of law”.
As well as being the “protector of the sacred”, the constitution appoints the State as “guarantor of religion” and “guarantor of freedom of conscience” and promises the “neutrality of places of worship in relation to political manipulation”.
However Article 1e of the new constitution (an Article which cannot be amended) specifies that Islam is the “religion of the State”.
The Catholic Church has spoken out in support of the new constitution, which is seen to guarantee freedom of belief.
“We see the respect of every person, whatever his belief, as the foundation of moral legitimacy and every social and legal standard,” said Father Nicolas Lhernould, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Tunis.
However, some have criticised Article 6 as “confusing”.
“We must remove the vagueness of this article, which gives the State the right to ‘guarantee’ religion and ‘protect the sacred’, which can lead to threatening interpretations of citizenship and freedom,” said the Tunisian League of Human Rights.
But Fr. Lhernould said that the constitution was a step in the right direction. “A formula is never absolute; it is its application that counts,” he said. “The situation of religious minorities, and their development, is an important indicator of the quality of a democratic framework.”
However, this part of the constitution was not welcomed by Tunisia’s Wafa party. “This freedom allows Satanists to organise public events to spread their beliefs,” they said.
Tunisia is a cosmopolitan nation, influenced throughout history by different civilisations and religions. With a population of 11 million, the country has between 25,000 and 30,000 Christians, consisting of a large group of expatriate believers – from about 80 countries – and a small group of native-born citizens of European and Arab descent.
They are divided into four main groups: Catholics, the Reformed Church, the Anglican Church and the Orthodox Church.
Tunisia is ranked No. 30 on the 2014 World Watch List, which ranks the 50 countries where practising Christianity is most fraught. Tunisia is given 55 points on the 2014 list, five more than in the previous year. This rise is explained by both an increase in the “squeeze” on the small Christian community in the country and a higher number of violent incidents involving Christians.
The World Watch List says that the main threat to Christians in Tunisia is Islamic extremism, which is said to be present at different levels, notably at the family level as converts to Christianity are often not supported in their choice of religion by family members.
Since the 2011 uprising, many different Islamist groupings, previously oppressed under Ben Ali, have emerged. The ultra-conservative Salafists have spread fear throughout the country with huge street protests and rallies. Islamist groups have also been linked to the assassinations of two prominent opposition secularist figures.

Pastor killed as riots hit Mombasa
Published: February 07, 2014. More than 100 arrested as police clash with members of controversial mosque. An assistant pastor at a church in Mombasa, Kenya was killed on Feb. 2 while guarding his church during the night. Lawrence Kazungu Kadenge, 59, assistant pastor at the Glory of God Ministries Church, died at about 2 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing two men fleeing the area.
Senior pastor Andrew Msumbi Kioko told World Watch Monitor that no arrests have been made but police are investigating.
“It is very hard for me because we worked very closely together,” said Kioko. “His family has been hit very hard. All of us, the family and congregants, need prayers as we grieve his loss – we need God’s comfort. Please pray for us.”
Kadenge leaves behind a wife, Lydia, and 13 children. His burial is scheduled for Feb. 8.
The motives for the murder remain unknown, but there are suspicions that it may be related to the recent Mombasa riots.
The situation in Kenya’s second largest city remains tense after riots last weekend, in which one person died and many were injured.
Police had stormed the controversial Musa mosque in the Majengo area of the city in an attempt to stop alleged jihad classes.
In protest, angry youths barricaded roads and stoned vehicles. Police arrested 125 youths, who will be kept in custody until Feb. 7 to allow police to complete investigations.
The government said on Feb. 4 that it is considering closing the Musa and Sakina mosques for being associated with extremist preaching and Al-Shabaab recruitment.

Christians offered only menial jobs despite legal efforts to eradicate discrimination.
A public university in Pakistan defies court orders and misleads government authorities to avoid giving federally approved jobs to non-Muslims, a Christian politician in the nation’s ruling party says. In May 2009 the government passed a law requiring 5% of jobs to be allocated to religious minorities. The University of Sargodha is located in the Punjab province, where most of the country’s Christians reside, has hired hundreds of employees since this legislation was implemented in 2010 but continues to use bureaucratic tactics to avoid hiring non-Muslims.
Chaudhry Mushtaq Gill, MP, Pakistan Muslim League (N). The legislation was created to protect religious minorities and minimise injustice for people applying for government jobs, but state officials are the main hurdle to its implementation. The legislation was initiated by Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian MP who was assassinated three years ago. He had been a prominent figure in the support of Asia Bibi a Christian woman sentenced to death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Mohammed and for seeking amendments to Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. Pakistan is an Islamic state with 95-98% of the population practicing Islam, while the remainder of the population primarily practices other religions such as Hinduism, Christianity and Sikhism.
Chaudhry Mushtaq Gill is a Christian political leader in the Pakistan Muslim League (N), and he filed a case against the university through the ombudsman in September 2012. The university lost the case and the ombudsman ordered the following in May 2013:
“The University of Sargodha gave various advertisements for recruitment after March 2010 without prescribing [the] 5% quota for the minorities which violates the provisions of policy instructions ... Maladministration of the Agency is established.”
According to Gill, nearly one year has passed since this was ordered and the university has not rectified its wrongdoing.
The record provided by the university to the ombudsman verifies that 102 of 111 Christian hired since 2010 are working as street sweepers. While the nine remaining Christians are primarily working as clerks and gardeners with one working as a storekeeper and the other as a laboratory attendant.  The occupation of street sweeping is traditionally considered menial and degrading under the Indian caste system; hence, only “untouchables” are given jobs in this category. “Untouchability” is a social-religious practice rooted in the Indian caste system that ostracizes minority groups by segregating them from the majority of society. Pakistani Muslims still observe the caste system due to having lived in close proximity with Hindus for hundreds of years. Christians are mostly considered to come from the untouchable class, so they are expected to work in menial jobs like those of street sweeping in both the public and private sectors.  Talking to World Watch Monitor, Gill said the affirmative action by the government was being rendered meaningless. “During the proceedings before the ombudsman, the university officials stated that the quota does not apply to high ranking jobs like that of teaching, while the notification clearly states that it applies to all posts across the board.” Gill further added that the University of Sargodha was not the only university ignoring the minority quota. “There are dozens of other universities. I am seeking same directions from the ombudsman [regarding these] and some have agreed to implement the quota as well,” he said.

Indian elections: what could they mean for minority Christians?
Published: April 04, 2014 by Anto Akkara. Fears Hindu nationalist BJP leader Modi will win. India is gearing up for the largest show of democracy on earth. Ahead of national elections, the silent Christian community in India reportedly 2.3 percent of its 1.2 billion people in 2001, though experts say this was an underestimate   has become restive and alert. An electorate of 814 million - much more than the population of the whole of Europe - is eligible to cast the ballot in the staggered polls (scheduled in nine phases from April 7 to May 12) to choose India’s 14th Parliament. The national alliance of all the mainline churches, the National United Christian Forum, has come out with an appeal: the Catholic Church (which accounts for two thirds of the 28 million plus Christians) has issued a voter guideline, and regional ecumenical Christian bodies have also come out with similar advisories in the last few days. Two major alliances - the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by the ‘secular’ Congress Party (that has ruled the nation for the past two terms) and the National Democratic Alliance, led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - are the main protagonists.
Apart from these two alliances, 25 or so regional parties make the combat tougher for each of the 543 seats in ‘Lok Sabha’ (‘House of the People’ – the lower House of the Indian parliament) that will decide who will rule India for the next five years.
With the opposition alliance led by the BJP (known for espousing a Hindu nationalist agenda) being projected by the pre-poll surveys as front runner in elections that are forecast to produce a fractured verdict, there is growing unease in the Christian community. This is writ large in the voter guidelines and statements the churches have made in the run-up to the elections. The Catholic Church calls for prayer "for divine assistance for all the citizens of India so that we may elect the best persons…; uphold the democratic and secular character of our great nation and selflessly work for the peace and prosperity of all the people of India."
In fact, the churches’ penchant for ‘parties upholding a secular character’ began with the emergence of the BJP as a major player in Indian politics from the 1990s.

2014’s vociferous BJP campaign has been built around its ‘mascot’ Narendra Modi, chief minister of the western state of Gujarat, who is projected as prime minister in waiting.
While the Hindu nationalist lobby hails Modi as an able administrator who can accelerate India’s sagging economy, secular parties dub him as a polarizing personality. He carries the stain of the 2002 carnage of over 1,200 Muslims in Gujarat – the homeland of Mahatma Gandhi – when Hindu mobs targeted Muslims following the torching of a train carrying Hindu pilgrims.
The connivance and inaction of the police under Modi’s command, and his persistent refusal to express regret for the deaths, has made Modi the target of many secular groups.
"There is (also) a fear in the minds of (Christians)," admitted Rev. Roger Gaikwad, general secretary of the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI), a network of 30 Orthodox and Protestant churches. "Some fear that difficult are days ahead."
However, outspoken Jesuit activist Father Cedric Prakash, based in Gujarat state, asserted that "the fears are misplaced. The Modi hype is built on propaganda. Once the mask is exposed, the hype will be gone." In fact, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (Congress Party) - known for his moderate reaction to his opponents - made an uncharacteristic comment in the run-up saying "It will be disastrous for the country to have Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister."
Despite a media blitz over Modi’s much acclaimed ‘Gujarat model of development’ (in which the state he governs has seen fast economic growth), Father Prakash noted that "contrary to the rise in economic data, the social indicators rank badly here."
As the election drew closer, even national media have started spotting gaping holes in Modi’s model. ‘The Week’ in its March 31 cover story questioned Modi’s ‘deafening silence’ on the neglect of social development and the poor, at the cost of big industrial houses.
The ‘Indian Express’ English daily in a lead article on April 3 too has raised doubts about Gujarat’s growth story: "State is high on growth, low on development", it noted, pointing to low growth rates of the state in alleviation of poverty, malnutrition and farmers’ health.
The BJP has tried its level best to break the ice with Christians. It made a quiet effort for an audience for Modi with top Catholic leaders at the CBCI General Assembly of 190 bishops in Kerala in February. But the Catholic Church refused.
The BJP is trying desperately to shed its ‘anti-Christian’ image. When the Election Commission fixed the polling date for Goa - a former Portuguese colony along India’s west coast - for April 17 (Maundy Thursday), Catholic Archbishop Filipe Neri of Goa was not alone in demanding a date change. Manohar Parikar, BJP Chief Minister of Goa, too endorsed the Church demand, forcing the Election Commission to bring the polls forward in a state where 40 percent of election officials are Catholics.
Despite such gestures, many a Christian remains sceptical of the BJP. States under BJP rule have routinely witnessed a rise in incidents of anti-Christian violence, while some BJP State governments have shown eagerness to rush through anti-conversion legislation. Assailants in brutal attacks on Christians and the rape of nuns have been defended by BJP leaders.
However, two Bishops of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (which traces its roots back to ‘doubting’ Thomas, believed to have reached India) in January angered the majority Christian community with praise of Modi and his Gujarat model of development.
When the two, from southern Kerala state, hailed Modi after calling on him, the BJP camp was elated. But most Christians were furious. "It is unfortunate that the Bishops have decided to meet the man behind the Gujarat genocide" fumed one.
What prospects would the Congress-led UPA coalition offer?
"Election 2014 offers us (Christians) little freedom of choice. The only option is between corruption and communalism," lamented Rev. Valson Thampu, principal of New Delhi’s prestigious St Stephen’s College run by the Church of North India.
While the BJP-led coalition is branded as ‘communal’ for espousing the Hindu nationalist agenda, corruption scandals have taken the sheen off the ruling UPA Coalition that returned to power in 2009 with a bigger mandate.
"Both main parties are unacceptable and meaningless," quipped Rev. Thampu. Apart from that, he is "worried about the media playing for the political galleries and tarnishing the sanctity of the polls...Money and media power has reached its nadir in this election. It is a media-powered election with the results being declared even before the voting has begun. This is an insult to democracy."
However, he went on to note that "the Indian electorate may not be fooled by the media...Modi’s hype is built on publicity. This could fall apart like the ‘India Shining campaign’ of 2004 (when the BJP -led ruling coalition called for early polls with an aggressive campaign. However, the results stunned poll prophets and catapulted the opposition Congress Party into power).
Due to the power of money, many in the mainstream media do not speak about the sad reality," also added Fr Prakash, a bitter critic of Modi. The election outcome should be known by the mid-end May.

An Iranian Nobel Prize-winner has warned EU and US officials that Iran’s nuclear programme is distracting them from addressing the country’s human rights abuses.
Shirin Ebadi, now living in the UK, has asked the West to rethink its sanctions, saying that rather than curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions, they are affecting the lives of ordinary citizens, many of whom have become “very poor”.
Long-term sanctions against Iran are likely to be reviewed in the light of current negotiations in Geneva between Iran and the P5+1 (US, Russia, China, the UK, France and Germany).
President Obama told NBC News: “The US confirmed some sanctions relief was being offered in return for concrete, verifiable measures. We can provide them some very modest relief [from sanctions], but keeping the sanctions architecture in place.”
Ebadi, speaking at a Nobel Laureates’ conference in Poland on Oct 21, ahead of today’s Geneva talks, said she was disappointed with new President Hassan Rouhani’s lack of response to human rights abuses in the country, saying that more people had been executed since his election in June than during the same period last year under former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
“Unfortunately the world focuses on nuclear energy more than human rights and does not pay attention to the situation of violations of human rights in Iran,” she said. “And this is why the human rights conditions are worsening in Iran.”
She added that religious and ethnic minorities continue to be persecuted.
Alireza Miryousefi, spokesman for Iran’s UN mission, said his country had entered a “new stage of democracy” under Rouhani, following “free, fair, transparent and democratic” elections.
He added that Rouhani has appointed a special assistant on minority affairs Ali Younesi to ensure ethnic and religious minorities are protected.
Younesi recently expressed disappointment and concern over the recent executions, saying they had been carried out by “extremists”.
Earlier this week, a Christian jailed for 10 years was set free after serving three months of his sentence.
However, the previous week a group of four Christians lost their own appeals against jail terms for the same charge of attendance of a “house church”, labelled an “anti-security organisation”.
Meanwhile Saeed Abedini, an Iranian-born US citizen and pastor serving eight years in prison for missionary work, has been transferred from Tehran’s Evin Prison to Rajai Shahr Prison in nearby Karaj.
Reports suggest the conditions at the Karaj prison are very poor and that he has been transferred to a ward in which Iran’s most violent prisoners are held.
“Going to Karaj is a severe punishment,” said a Dutch diplomat in Tehran in 2005. “In Rajaï Shahr, political prisoners have to share cells with dangerous criminals like murderers, rapists and drug addicts who don't hesitate to attack their cell mates. They have nothing to lose: many of them are condemned to death anyway. Murders or unexplained deaths are a regular occurrence."
The family found out about the move only on arrival for a weekly visit to Evin – and were then told that Abedini cannot have visitors in Karaj.

Flowers were placed upon Haik Hovsepian’s grave during a memorial service in Tehran on Sunday. World Watch Monitor. Memorial services are being held in Tehran, London and California to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of Haik Hovsepian, an Iranian pastor hailed by many Christians as a martyr.
Hovsepian vanished on January 19, 1994, three days after his protests helped to secure the release of fellow Iranian pastor Mehdi Dibaj, who had been imprisoned for 10 years and sentenced to death for apostasy.
Hovsepian, 49, was found with multiple stab wounds to the chest and later buried in an Islamic cemetery after police claimed they had been unable to identify his body.
His family were eventually notified of his death on January 30 and arranged a Christian reburial. His death hit global news headlines around the world due to his prominent role in Iran’s Church.
The pastor had not only been outspoken in his defence for Dibaj, but also against a perceived lack of religious freedom in Iran in general.
In November 1992, he invited the UN’s Human Rights Special Representative for Iran, Reynaldo Galindo Pohl, to mediate “true religious freedom” in Iran, based “not on ethnic or religious identity, but on personal conviction”.
The pastor also refused to sign a document stating that Christians in Iran enjoyed full religious freedom.
An ethnic Armenian, Hovespian’s first role as pastor came at the age of 17, when he assumed the leadership of a church in Tehran’s Majidieh suburb. Following his marriage to Takoosh Ginagosia in 1966, he then pastored Gorgan Church in north Iran.
In 1969, the couple were involved in a severe car accident, which claimed the life of their six-month-old son. The couple were also badly injured and doctors feared they might never walk again, but they made a remarkable recovery and, several months later, returned to Gorgan Church, where they served for a further 12 years.
They moved to Tehran in 1981, when Hovsepian became superintendent of the Assemblies of God (AOG) Church in Iran. In 1986, he was appointed the Council of Protestant Churches’ first chairman.
Hovsepian was survived by his wife and their four children, Rebecca, Joseph, Gilbert and Andre, all of whom now live in California. His family are holding a public memorial service on Saturday (January 25) evening at Glendale Presbyterian Church in Glendale, California. A memorial service was held in Tehran on Sunday (January 19) and flowers were placed upon Hovsepian’s grave. Meanwhile, the Iranian Church in London plans to hold a celebration in the summer to mark the deaths of Haik Hovsepian and two other pastors killed that year in Iran.
Has the situation changed for Christians in Iran in the past 20 years?
Hovsepian was one of a number of Christian pastors who disappeared, and was later found dead, in the early ‘90s. Others included Mehdi Dibaj, the pastor whose freedom Hovsepian had fought to attain (who, six months after his release was abducted and killed), Tateos Mikaelian and Bagher Yusefi.
Hovespian’s eldest son Joseph, 40, told World Watch Monitor that the number of Christians in Iran has “grown significantly” since his father’s death, but that “persecution continues and in some respects has even increased”.

An Iranian Christian, whose name is being withheld to protect his security, added that Iran today is a different prospect for Christians than at the time of Hovsepian’s death.
He said that Iranian Christians continue to fear persecution, but that the persecution takes a different form. “There has been a change in the approach of the government,” he said. “Twenty years ago, the approach was much more brutal: people were killed for becoming Christians, and this would happen inside and outside the country.
“Now the approach is to put people under pressure by giving them long prison sentences or heavy fines, and spreading fear. They don’t kill them anymore, or at least not often, but what they do is plant fear into people’s lives.”
Last year, World Watch Monitor reported that, according to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran (ICHRI), Christians in Iran faced “systematic persecution and prosecution”. The ICHRI report, The Cost of Faith: Persecution of Christian Protestants and Converts in Iran, claimed that, “despite the Iranian government’s assertions that it respects the rights of its recognised religious minorities, the Christian community in Iran faces systematic state persecution and discrimination”.
This view is supported by Mansour Borji, advocacy officer for human rights initiative Article18, who told World Watch Monitor: “Sometimes the phrase ‘systematic persecution’ is used so loosely that it sounds like a cliché. However, in the case of Iran's persecution of Christians, it fits the criteria.”
Borji added: “Arbitrary arrests and imprisonment; severe restrictions on worship services in Farsi language; a ban on the publication of Bibles and Christian literature in Farsi; threats and harassment of evangelical church leaders; and continued attempts to confiscate church properties – these are all pieces in the puzzle. In a nutshell, there is a systematic attempt to deprive churches of membership, literature, leadership training and development, communion with other Christians around the world, and the right to freedom of religion guaranteed by the international covenants of which Iran is a signatory.”
Meanwhile, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, noted in September 2012 that more than 300 Christians had been arrested and detained since 2010, while at least 41 were detained for periods ranging from one month to over a year, sometimes without official charges.
Some predicted an upturn in fortunes for Iran’s Christians after the installation of Hassan Rouhani as president in August, but, despite the release of a few Christian s from jail, many more are still detained.

In 2007, Haik Hovsepian’s wife and children founded Hovsepian Ministries, a non-profit organisation which supports Iranian Christians around the world through advocacy, church visits and speaking engagements.
His widow Takoosh, who led the family out of Iran five years after her husband’s death, is in the throes of writing her first book and also spends a lot of time counselling other widows.
“My mother is a living testimony, and one of those whose life speaks for itself,” said Joseph Hovsepian. “After Haik's martyrdom she was in the spotlight for millions of Christian and non-Christian Iranians who learnt about Haik's brutal death. She has not neglected to tell her story to the world.
“Her experiences include serving as a pastor's wife in the villages of Iran for 12 years, as well as living and ministering in more modern cities and cultures, such as Tehran. As a result she has been able to connect with a wide range of cultural backgrounds, and to this day she continues to be a voice for persecuted families – in particular, Iranian women.” Edward Hovsepian, 64, the eldest of Haik’s three younger brothers, who are all pastors, took over as superintendent of Iran’s AOG churches after his death. After a visit to London in 2003, he was unable to return to Iran and became head of the Iranian Church in London, where he still works as senior pastor.
Haik’s daughter Rebecca, 43, told World Watch Monitor the family had clung on to their Christian faith despite her father’s death. “As we have experienced the journey with Christ, it has had its ups and downs,” she said. “Of course, after the martyrdom, at the very beginning, there was some confusion regarding God being in control of the whole situation; however, since God’s goodness never fails, as time passed by, and especially after seeing so many people’s faith and zeal for Christ strengthened, we were assured of God’s sovereignty. Nothing happened outside of his will.”
Article18’s Mansour Borji said Haik’s death was a “modern example of Christ-likeness”.
“For many church members who experienced those days, his death was a reminder of Christ’s sacrificial death and a call for further commitment and faithfulness,” he added.

Bombs heighten fears that Zanzibar autonomy movement targets Christians

A series of bomb blasts in Tanzania’s island of Zanzibar is stoking fears that an Islamist breakaway movement is increasingly targeting Christians. Since 2010, the cases have been on the increase and Christians and their leaders — many of them originally from mainland Tanzania — say they are anxious.
In the latest attack on Feb. 24, assailants exploded a homemade bomb near the gate of St. Monica Anglican Cathedral, slightly damaging the church wall and a car park. Anglican bishop Michael Hafidh of Zanzibar told World Watch Monitor at the time he did not know who had planned and executed the attack. Also Feb. 24, a similar explosive went off at the Mercury restaurant, a popular hangout for western tourists. A day earlier, four people were injured when a bomb was thrown into the Assemblies of God Church in the Founi area of the island. On Feb. 15, in the Tomondo area of the Island, a home-made bomb was thrown at the door of the Adventist Church during a worship service. Hafidh said although this is not the first time the churches had been targeted, the recent series of explosions has left Christians feeling more scared.
“We don’t know the motive, but the police have said they are investigating. We think these are people opposed to the presence of Christians here,” he said in February.
Christians and Muslims have peacefully shared Zanzibar until 2010, when the Association of Islamic Mobilization and Propagation, a religious movement known as Jumuiya ya Uamsho na Miadhara ya Kiislam, or UAMSHO, began clamouring for Zanzibar’s autonomy. UAMSHO registered in Zanzibar as a non-governmental organization in 2001. In its charter, it declared its aim of aim of establishing Zanzibar as a centre of Islamic institutions under Islamic law and free from the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, the official name of Tanzania.
In more recent years the campaign has taken on religious overtones. Clashes with police have ended with churches being burned and clerics being attacked. In February 2013, a Roman Catholic priest in the Zanzibar Diocese, Rev. Evaristus Mushi, was killed by unknown gunmen. His death followed a shooting two months earlier that left another priest, Rev. Ambrose Mkenda, badly injured.
Before Mushi’s killing, UAMSHO had circulated leaflets mentioning their youth training in Somalia, and threatening attacks.
“Our youth who went for training in Somalia have assured us that before we celebrate the birth of Prophet Mohammed, there will be other ‘celebrations’ about these infidels, that will be a big funeral for them,” said one undated leaflet, in Swahili, that circulated before the attack on Mushi.
The leaflets praised attacks on churches, referring to them as “dens of non-believers.” They also claimed the group had support from within the Zanzibari government of President Mohamed Shein. Christians on the island also received text messages warning them to leave the country or face death.
“The problem is the group is mixing calls for autonomy with religion,” said Rev. Cosmas Shayo, a Catholic priest on Zanzibar. “They issues threat to Christians. They have attacked churches and clergy. We become more afraid when they circulate threatening leaflets.”
Added another Zanzibar priest, Rev. Thomas Assenga: “We fear anything can happen anytime. Things are not easy here.”
In September 2013, Rev. Amselmo Mwang’amba, an elderly Catholic priest, was seriously injured when assailants splashed him with an acid. Mwang’amba, who headed the Roman Catholic Congregation of Cheju in the central district of the Island, was attacked as he walked out of a cyber café he frequented.
A month earlier, two British teenage girls, who had volunteered with a local church nursery school, suffered severe burns in a similar acid attack. Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, had suffered burns of the chest, face and hands in the attack, which occurred as they walked in Stone Town, an old part of the island.
If UAMSHO wins independence for Zanzibar, it may alleviate political — but not religious —tensions, according to Rev. Laurenti Magesa, a renowned Tanzanian Catholic theologian and scholar.
“Of course, the population of Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim, but there is a big percentage of Muslims in many regions of the mainland living alongside Christians,” he told World Watch Monitor.
Economically and socially, Zanzibar stands to lose if Christians leave the island, Magesa said. They provide much of the labor supporting the tourism industry.
“Other than the pride of political identity — ‘We are a sovereign state’— I personally don't see a genuine case for Zanzibar's cessation,” he said.

Freedom of religion and belief is an issue “whose time has come”, the vice chairwoman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom said yesterday.
During the presentation of two reports on religious freedom at the European Parliament in Brussels on Feb. 12, commission Vice Chairwoman Katrina Lantos Swett said that the prominence of the issue was highlighted by President Barack Obama’s decision to choose it as the focus of his speech at the recent annual Prayer Breakfast in Washington.
The UN’s Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Heiner Bielefeldt, agreed that there is an “increasing interest” in the subject, although he said it is often connected with a “certain degree of suspicion” and is “perhaps the only right to freedom which sometimes triggers mixed emotions”.
Speaking to World Watch Monitor following the presentation of the two reports, Bielefeldt said that life for Christians has “deteriorated in a number of countries” in recent years, and highlighted some prominent examples.
“We have, unfortunately, seen a deterioration of the situation for Christians in a number of countries, particularly in the Middle East,” he said. “Obvious examples include Egypt, Syria and Iraq.”
Bielefeldt said all minorities, not only Christians, are at risk as the Syrian civil war continues.
“The extremely volatile situation in Syria includes increased risks for minorities in general,” he said. “Everyone is affected by the instability, it’s not something that exclusively targets Christians, but usually minorities are at disproportionate risk of ending up between the big fighting camps.”
In Egypt, Bielefeldt said that discrimination against Christians that existed before the Arab Spring has worsened. “During the Arab Spring we saw very promising signs of a new cooperation between various groups, but now authoritarian regimes have taken over and the situation has worsened there, certainly,” he said.
However, Bielefeldt said it would be wrong to perceive that all Muslims and Christians within the country are opposed to each other. “Sometimes you get the impression from some headlines that it’s perceived like that, but it’s not that Muslims in general persecute Christians in general,” he said. “Muslims are also fighting with Muslims, fighting about the role of religion in public life and Sharia.”

The rapporteur added that there has been “no meaningful change” on freedom of religion in Iran, despite the optimism surrounding last year’s regime change. “So far, nothing has materialised,” he said. “You still have laws discriminating against Christians. In most constitutions you see freedom of religion as a guarantee which is surrounded by lots of caveats, but in Iran you don’t have freedom of religion even in theory.”
Bielefeldt said that for Christians in Iran of Armenian heritage, it is usually possible to “live and breathe”, providing they don’t attempt to spread their message. However, he said Protestant and Evangelical groups are treated with a “high degree” of suspicion. “[Protestants] are simply associated with America and perceived as doing missionary work,” he said, “which by the way is covered by freedom or religion and belief, but this is not welcome at all in the country.”
The European Parliament Working Group on Freedom of Religion or Belief was presenting its first annual report, noting an increase in violations of religious freedom around the globe and recommending EU action within 15 countries (China, Egypt, Eritrea, India, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, and Uzbekistan), which were labelled “serious violators”.
Peter van Dalen, a member of the European Parliament, said: “Today is a sad day, as right now many millions of people are bullied, discriminated, persecuted and even killed for their faith. I hope that our work may contribute towards improving this situation.”
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom also presented its annual report, in which 15 nations (Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Uzbekistan, Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Vietnam) are designated as “countries of particular concern”.

Kaduna villages’ death toll rises to 150, including pastor’s wife and three children

The death toll following a massacre across three villages in central Nigeria a week ago has risen beyond 150, according to the deputy Chairman of the Kaura Local Government Area in Southern Kaduna.
Suspected Fulani herdsmen raided three mainly Christian villages Ugwar Sankwai, Ungwan Gata and Chenshyi (known also as Tekun) late last Friday night (14th March).

240 houses were set ablaze, alongside three churches, one ECWA (Evangelical Church Winning All) and two Anglican. The wife and three children of the pastor of the ECWA Church, Rev Likita Riku were killed, and burnt beyond recognition.
The victims were buried in three different mass graves after inter-denominational prayers last Sunday.
On Tuesday, March 18, our reporter visited the area: three days after the massacre, he saw that the survivors were still highly traumatized. The affected villages, comprised of mainly farmers and small scale traders, were deserted (an undermined number of food stores were also looted). Dozens of those affected were sleeping in a primary school, some of them were with relatives in nearby areas.
Meanwhile hundreds of relatives and sympathizers arrived to commiserate with survivors. The ECWA pastor was still in a state of total shock, unable to speak to other relatives and a number of church officials who came to try to support him.
Surviving children, who were still crying, asked where their parents, brothers, sisters and friends were: many were hacked to death.
Explaining how the killings occurred, a survivor, Emmanuel Tonak, said, “We were fast asleep when we heard gun shots and chanting of ‘Allahu akbar’ [God is great]. Suddenly we came out and saw them advancing and some houses in flames. They came around 11 pm. I escaped into the forest, when they came I started hearing cries and gun shots.”
Government National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) workers also came to provide some relief:  notably food, mattresses, blankets and mosquito nets.
NEMA has registered about 2,000 people displaced by the attack: its Zonal Coordinator Alhaji Musa Ilallah acknowledged that more may be needed, due to the scale of destruction.
“Although the materials may not be sufficient, we urge the people to accept them and to try to embrace the spirit of forgiveness and love one another.”
Attacks carried out by Fulani herdsmen in central Nigeria have reached an unprecedented level this year. (About 35 people were killed and a Catholic Church was attacked by Fulani armed men in several villages last Sunday afternoon 16th Feb in Taraba State, on Nigeria's eastern border).
Some analysts point to the use of guerrilla warfare tactics, aimed at wiping out an entire community. Women and children were clearly attacked, and in some cases prominent families - such as community or religious leaders – were targeted.
The Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, who was on his way to United States to address an audience on peace and security, cut short his trip to return to Nigeria. He vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice but he didn’t explain how.
“We pray that God should expose the people that are causing this problem. We pray that God should touch their hearts to stop such dastardly acts or destroy their evil machinations. We must not despair under these brazen attacks. As a leader, I am not happy with such ugly situations because it is my responsibility to ensure security and safety for the entire people of the State."
The Secretary of the Kaduna State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Rev. Sunday Ibrahim, has condemned the massacre.
“The killing is barbaric and unjustifiable. We are mourning and condemn in strong terms these serial killings. As Christians we are not preaching violence, but urging the government and security agencies to rise up and face the reality of things. It is clear they have religious motives and the government must protect our people’s religious freedom to the letter.”
The national president of Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) Dr. Ephraim Goje has denounced a ‘jihad’ declared by Fulani on Christians in Southern Kaduna.
The security forces were accused of being slow to intervene, leaving enough time for the assailants to withdraw. According to survivors, the attackers have vowed to come back. Despite heavy security reinforcements, the prospect of further violence seems high.

At least 22 parishioners of a Catholic parish in north-eastern Nigeria were "slaughtered" by Boko Haram attackers on Sunday, the local bishop has told the BBC.
Stephen Dami Mamza, bishop of Yola, said parishioners from Waga Chakawa village described to him how attackers arrived in trucks near the end of mass. The intruders locked the church, fired guns at those trying to flee, and cut the throats of others, Mamza told the BBC. They set off bombs and for the next four hours, burned houses and took hostages, the bishop said.

Authorities suspect the militant Boko Haram group was behind the two attacks. The insurgent group, especially active in north-eastern Nigeria, is attempting to throw off Nigerian rule and establish an Islamic state, and is responsible for thousands of deaths since 2009.

'Challenging' time for religious leaders
President Goodluck Jonathan has described attacks by Boko Haram as the nation’s share of global terrorism, but said that Nigeria will strive to prevail.
“Nigeria is getting its share of the terror,” he said. “God willing, Nigeria will overcome these challenges. We express our condolences to you, members of the emirate council and indeed all the people of Adamawa State.”
He added that religious leaders in the country were facing a “challenging” period.

Nigerian Politician Was Strangled - Pathologist
The chief forensic pathologist of Lagos State Professor Oladapo Obafunwa has told the court that the late politician, Funsho Williams, was strangled to death by his killers.

Lavrov: dichiarazione comune di Russia, USA UE e Ucraina dopo i negoziati di Ginevra. La Russia, gli USA, la UE e l'Ucraina hanno adottato una dichiarazione comune dopo il vertice di Ginevra, riguardante passi concreti per la risoluzione della crisi ucraina, ha dichiarato il ministro degli Esteri Sergej Lavrov. “Abbiamo approvato un documento. E' la dichiarazione di oggi, in cui abbiamo concordato la necessità di intraprendere i primi e concreti passi per la stabilizzazione della crisi”, - ha detto il capo della diplomazia russa.
Secondo Lavrov, le parti devono rinunciare alla violenza e alla manifestazione di estremismo, razzismo e odio religioso, incluso l'antisemitismo. I partecipanti al vertice hanno concordato la necessità di avviare velocemente un dialogo all'interno della società nel quadro di un processo di riforma costituzionale con la partecipazione di tutte le regioni dell'Ucraina, ha sottolineato Lavrov.
