In precedenza il vice premier dell'Ucraina Vyacheslav Kirilenko ha dichiarato che Kiev ammetterà al concorso Eurovision la Russia a patto che essa sostituisca la sua cantante, Yulia Samoylova, con un altro concorrente che non abbia problemi con la legge ucraina.
"La proposta delle autorità ucraine non verrà nemmeno presa in considerazione. Adottare questa scelta significherebbe che Yulia Samoylova, la quale si è esibita in Crimea, territorio russo, abbia violato delle leggi ucraine. È assurdo, insensato, una totale assurdità. Non è possibile per principio" ha scritto Klinchevic sulla propria pagina Facebook.
Il senatore ha anche osservato che c'è una "ragione puramente umana" per la quale la proposta di Kiev è inaccettabile, ovvero che la ragazza ha lottato tutta la vita per guadagnarsi il diritto di esibirsi ad Eurovision.
"Prendere una tale decisione sarebbe irrispettoso nei confronti della ragazza. In breve, abbiamo fatto la nostra scelta, e non sostituiremo la nostra cantante in nessun caso. Si sta letteralmente spingendo la Russia al boicottaggio di questo evento, così come al nostro posto avrebbe fatto qualsiasi altro governo civile, rispettabile e prestigioso", ha concluso.
