The release of the video comes as Hamas continues to hold talks with Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah movement on a unity agreement. As part of the Hamas-Fatah deal Abbas will issue a "presidential decree" announcing the dates for elections which PA officials said would likely take place within the next six months. The PA's Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah has already offered to step down to pave the way for a unity government. The unity government is supposed to be made up of independent figures but a senior Hamas figure said this week that the group's leadership decided to submit a candidate for the presidency. On Monday Abbas held "positive" talks with Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal in Doha in the first meeting since the deal was signed.On Tuesday Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman warned that "no matter when elections are Hamas will win and take control of the Palestinian Authority."

The Rialto Unified School District in California asked 8th graders to write an essay about whether the Holocaust was not actually "merely a political scheme created to influence public emotions and gain wealth."
The district's interim head Mohammad Z. Islam took action to withdraw the assignment as soon as he learned about it spokeswoman Syeda Jafri told AFP.
"When the interim Superintendent and I became aware of this essay from the Educational Services Dept. immediate action was taken to eliminate this writing prompt due to the harsh inaccurate wordage" she wrote in an email quoted by the news agency. "We will begin to continue to teach the importance of the Holocaust with compassion and sensitivity. We deeply regret the pain that this may have caused" she added. The Anti Defamation League a Jewish lobby body slammed the assignment.
"It is ADL's general position that an exercise asking students to question whether the Holocaust happened has no academic value; it only gives legitimacy to the hateful and anti-Semitic promoters of Holocaust Denial" said its regional boss Matthew Friedman in a letter to the district quoted by AFP. "ADL does not have any evidence that the assignment was given as part of a larger insidious agenda. Rather the district seems to have given the assignment with an intent although misguided to meet Common Core standards relating to critical learning skills" added an ADL statement. "ADL has thanked the district for its quick response to this matter and offered further assistance" including teacher training it added. In a statement Monday the schools district said "The intent of the writing prompt was to exercise the use of critical thinking skills. There was no offensive intent in the crafting of this assignment. We regret that the prompt was misinterpreted." "We appreciate the suggestions of the Anti-Defamation League as we have shared goals when it comes to our students and our community" it added.
The apology comes on the same day that Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif defended recent statements he made acknowledging the Holocaust and said he will not let Iran to turned into a security issue by Israel just because Tehran insists on denying the Holocaust. In the midst of the military standoff between Ukraine and Russia the Crimean peninsula's 800 Karaites a religious sect that splintered from Judaism is firmly supporting Russia. The Karaites broke off from Judaism in the 8th or 9th century when they rejected the Oral Law in favor of following their own interpretations of the Torah.
Anna Polkanova a member of the Crimean Karaite community who has studied the group's history clarified to AFP that "we do not define ourselves as Jews."
Despite having taken Judaism as their origin the Karaites separated from and opposed Judaism very early on and consequently were not targeted in the Holocaust and other anti-Semitic violence in Europe given that they are not Jews. The Crimean Karaite community cemetery features 7000 limestone graves some bearing Hebrew inscriptions. "This is a sacred place for us. People come here on pilgrimage" said Polkanova claiming the cemetery is "2000 years old." Crimea where the community is located held a controversial referendum vote last month and was annexed by Moscow after a de facto military invasion of the region. An aging community. The local Karaite community is aging quickly and most Karaites in Crimea's main city of Simferopol do not attend religious services on Saturday mornings. Svetlana Shergene a 74-year-old Karaite in Simferopol noted that the elderly congregation prays in a local school building due to the lack of a Karaite prayer house called kenassa. The former kenassa of Simferopol built in the 1800s was turned into a local television station during the Soviet era when the building's Star of David was replaced with a communist red star. "Look at that the kenassa has not been renovated since it was built" remarked Vladimir Ormeli the president of the Association of Crimean Karaites speaking about the building. Ormeli claims that efforts to gain possession of the Karaite cemetery the two existing Crimean kenassas and the Chufut-Kale fortress that houses one of the kenassas have been opposed by the Ukrainian authorities. For this reason Ormeli says the community is supportive of the newly imposed Russia invasion and annexation. "Most of us are hopeful" Ormeli said claiming that his co-religionists are "closer to Russian rather than Ukrainian culture." Soviet rule reportedly caused the near disappearance of the Karaim language which is closely related to that of the Crimean Tartar Muslim community which was deported from the region in 1944 by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

First Publish: 5/7/2014 [ Mavi Marmara ] A Turkish newspaper has released details of a high-level meeting of the country's military leaders in which the Turkish government had considered sending warships into Israel as a military escort for the Mavi Marmara flotilla - and the possibility of triggering a war with the Jewish state as a result. On May 31 2010 nine Turkish Islamists were killed on the flotilla after violently attacking IDF soldiers during an attempt to break Israel's naval blockade on the terrorist group Hamas-enclave Gaza. The incident worsened a growing diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Israel who had once been close allies. Statements to the Turkish press made by Retired Admiral of the Turkish Fleet Nusret Guner show how far the Erdogan government was prepared to go in supporting anti-Israel groups. The Islamist organization behind the flotilla - the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) has since been raided over ties to Al Qaeda and is suspected of sending weapons to Al Qaeda-linked groups in Syria. First Publish: 5/7/2014 Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry said on Tuesday it had dismantled a major "terrorist organization" with links to extremist elements in Syria and Yemen Al Arabiya reports. The organization was allegedly plotting attacks against government facilities and foreign interests according to the report. A statement from the ministry said 62 suspected members of the group were arrested. Among them were three foreigners including a Palestinian Arab a Yemeni and a Pakistani. Among the Saudi detainees there are 35 who had previously been detained on security-related allegations and released the statement said according to Al Arabiya. Members of the organization have "links with extremist elements in Syria and Yemen" it said adding that authorities are still hunting down 44 others whose names have been submitted to Interpol. Interior Ministry Spokesman Major General Mansour al-Turki told reporters in Riyadh that the organization has also made "direct" contact with the Islamist State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) the jihadist rebel organization operating in Syria. The group had been targeting "government and foreign interests" and had planned "wide -scale assassinations" he said according to Al Arabiya. The statement said "suspicious activities on social networks" had facilitated the arrests without providing further details. In a later interview with Al Arabiya al-Turki said terrorist cells in the kingdom are increasingly focused on smuggling operations along the southern border with Yemen. The fight against terrorism has been a top priority in Saudi Arabia. In February the Saudi king decreed jail terms of up to 20 years for belonging to "terrorist groups" and fighting abroad in another attempt to deter Islamist Saudis from becoming jihadists. In early March Saudi Arabia blacklisted the Muslim Brotherhood and two Syrian jihadist groups as terrorist organizations ordering citizens fighting abroad to return home within 15 days or face imprisonment. First Publish: 5/7/2014 a commander of the Al Qaeda-linked Islamist group which kidnapped nearly 300 Christian girls from a school in Nigeria has released a chilling video in which he mocks the victims and promises to sell them as slaves. The man identifies himself as Abubakar Shekau the leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group and begins by dispelling any doubts about who was behind the kidnapping in April boasting "I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the Market by Allah!" Breaking into laughter he continues: "There is a market for selling humans. Allah says I should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women!" Boko Haram has been responsible for scores of terrorist atrocities in Nigeria usually against Christian and government targets but also occasionally against Muslim figures who oppose them. The mass-kidnapping which took place in April was not the group's first attack on a school. Just two months previously the group shot and burned to death dozens of students in an attack on a boarding school. In a similar attack in 2013 Boko Haram terrorists murdered 50 students as they slept in their dormitories. In July of that year 29 pupils and a teacher were burned alive in another school. "Boko Haram" translates literally as "Western education is forbidden" in the Hausa language prominent in Nigeria's Muslim-majority north reflecting the group's opposition to any non-Muslim or western influence in the country including within its education system. The attack last April in Chiboke Borno state in which the 276 girls were kidnapped also saw 16 people killed and many more wounded. An international campaign has been set up in response to the atrocity including a viral social media campaign under the hashtag #bringbackourgirls.

Wed May 7 2014 'US isolated in sanctions on Russia'. 'Ukrainians have right to protest'. We know that a massacre happened in the Ukrainian city of Odessa last week in which more than 40 pro-Russian civilian protesters were killed when a public building they were seeking refuge in was deliberately set ablaze by neo-Nazi supporters of the Western-backed Kiev junta. Apparently the victims died from the blaze or from smoke inhalation or when they jumped from windows to the pavement below. But in the aftermath new shocking images have been published in various reputable Russian media sources that tell a far more harrowing story. Photos show victims lying on the floor of the Trade Union building who were only partially burned with their heads and upper limbs incinerated the rest of their bodies strangely unscarred. Suspiciously in many of the images the surrounding space where the bodies lay bears no evidence of fire damage. Other victims also appeared to have gunshot wounds to their charred heads. And in one particularly disturbing image the body of a pregnant woman is photographed bent over backwards on an office desk. The victim appears to have been garrotted; neither her body nor theoffice where her remains were found shows any signs of fire damage. Russian media report survivor accounts saying that the rooms they were hiding in to escape from the effects of the blaze were broken into by assailants who pretended to be pro-Russian protesters. On entering the offices those inside were attacked by the intruders. This suggests that persons associated with the neo-Nazi crowd outside the building somehow gained entry to the Trade Union building and then systematically set about murdering those inside. When news of the deadly blaze emerged last Friday it struck some observers as strange that so many people could have perished from a fire that was mainly located at the front of the building on the ground floor. The giant multi-storey solid stone structure surely would have given those trapped inside more escape routes or spaces to avoid the effects of deadly fumes. And how do we explain the macabre images of partially incinerated bodies surrounded by seemingly undamaged wooden floors and railings? Or the victims with apparent gunshot wounds to the head and the pregnant woman slumped on the office table? Another vile image shows a woman's body near an elevator door in which her naked lower body is charred but her upper body is clothed indicating that she may have been raped by her attackers before they killed her. The harrowing images suggest that something much more sinister happened than what initial reports conveyed. The initial reports are disturbing enough.

Earlier in the day Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said holding a presidential election in Ukraine would be unusual at the time when Kiev has deployed troops against civilians. He also dismissed a European proposal to hold fresh peace talks on Ukraine and labeled it "pointless". On April 23 Ukraine's acting government re-launched its military operation in the eastern and southern regions in a bid to root out the pro-Russia demonstrations. GENEVA — The Vatican revealed Tuesday that over the past decade it has defrocked 848 priests who raped or molested children and sanctioned another 2572 with lesser penalties providing the first ever breakdown of how it handled the more than 3400 cases of abuse reported to the Holy See since 2004.
The Vatican's UN ambassador in Geneva Archbishop Silvano Tomasi released the figures during a second day of grilling by a UN committee monitoring implementation of the UN treaty against torture. Tomasi insisted that the Holy See was only obliged to abide by the torture treaty inside the tiny Vatican City State which has a population of only a few hundred people. But significantly he didn't dispute the committee's contention that sexual violence against children can be considered torture. Legal experts have said that classifying sexual abuse as torture could expose the Catholic Church to a new wave of lawsuits since torture cases in much of the world don't carry statutes of limitations. Tomasi also provided statistics about how the Holy See has adjudicated sex abuse cases for the past decade. The Vatican in 2001 required bishops and religious superiors to forward all credible cases of abuse to Rome for review after determining that they were shuffling pedophile priests from diocese to diocese rather than subjecting them to church trials. Only in 2010 did the Vatican explicitly tell bishops and superiors to also report credible cases to police where local reporting laws require them to.
The Vatican statistics are notable in that they show how the peaks in numbers over the years — both of cases reported and sanctions meted out — roughly parallels the years in which abuse scandals were in the news. And they showed that far from diminishing in recent years the number of cases reported annually to the Vatican has remained a fairly constant 400 or so since 2010 the last year the scandal erupted in public around the globe. By Times of Israel staff May 7 2014 A heated discussion between two Jordanian journalists about the civil war in Syria developed into a brawl as the two demolished the studio in which they were being interviewed forcing staff to step in and separate the two. The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) provided a video of the incident on Wednesday. The journalists appeared earlier this week on Jordanian TV's current events program "The Two Ways" which airs live and were taking part in a panel on freedom of the press in Arab states when things took an ugly turn. Shaker al-Jawhari who supports the Syrian opposition accused Muhammad al-Jayousi a Baathist who supports Syrian president Bashar Assad of being a "deviant." "A deviant is someone who supports the slaughtering of people" Jawhari explained. "You are the deviant" Jayousi retorted but he was cut short by Jawhari who went on: "A deviant is someone whose views are determined according to benefits…a deviant is someone who jumps from one lap to another depending on who pays more." Jayousi then told Jawhari to "shut up" at which point the outraged opposition supporter rose up and grabbed the table. Al-Jayousi did the same and the two began shaking the table violently breaking it in two as the helpless host attempted to placate the squabbling men.

President Shimon Peres issued an appeal Wednesday for international pressure to coerce Hamas into accepting the Quartet terms and recognizing Israel a move that he said would allow for the resumption of the suspended peace negotiations. In a meeting with United States National Security Advisor Susan Rice Peres insisted "We must find a way to restart the negotiations between us and the Palestinians." While Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is "someone that we can negotiate with" and "wants to achieve peace" the main obstacle in reviving the talks Peres said is the recently forged reconciliation deal between Abbas's Fatah and the Gaza terror group. The latest insurgent attack targeted the town of Gamboru Ngala on the border with Cameroon where gunmen this week razed scores of buildings and fired on civilians as they tried to flee. Area Senator Ahmed Zanna put the death toll at 300 citing information provided by locals in an account supported by numerous residents.
Zanna said the town had been left unguarded because the soldiers based there had been redeployed north towards Lake Chad in an effort to rescue more than 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram on April 14. The shocking mass abduction has sparked global outrage and offers of help from the United States Britain France and China. Nigeria's response to the kidnappings has been widely criticized including by activists and parents of the hostages who say the military's search operation has been inept so far. The police on Monday offered 50 million naira ($300000) for any information leading to the girls' rescue. President Goodluck Jonathan's administration has sought to appear more engaged with the plight of the hostages in recent days especially after Boko Haram chief Abubakar Shekau released a video threatening to sell the girls as "slaves."
In a second kidnapping eleven more girls aged 12 to 15 years were seized Sunday from Gwoza an area not far from Chibok and also in Borno state Boko Haram's base.
The group's five-year uprising has killed thousands across Africa's most populous country and top economy with many questioning whether Nigeria has the capacity to contain the violence. Islamist fighters riding in armored trucks and on motorcycles stormed Gamboru Ngala after midday on Monday. Survivors said the extremists overran the town making it too dangerous for locals to immediately return. When the Islamists left residents went back to a town that was "littered" with dead bodies Musa Abba a witness told AFP. "All economic and business centers have been burnt. The market in the town which attracts traders from all over the area… has been completely burnt" the senator said. Gamboru Ngala has been attacked repeatedly in the past but Abba said "this (was) the worst Boko Haram attack (the town) has seen." US President Barack Obama has described the Chibok abductions as "heartbreaking" and "outrageous" and announced that a team of military experts had been sent to help Nigeria's rescue mission. British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday condemned the kidnappers as "pure evil" as his office said Britain was sending a team of experts to help with the kidnap response. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said a "special team" was at Nigeria's disposal while Jonathan said that visiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has also pledged assistance. Analysts said Jonathan's acceptance of Western military assistance suggested an admission he can no longer manage the Boko Haram uprising without help. As well as mounting pressure over the kidnappings Nigeria has been hit by a spate of bombings. Just a few hours before the mass abduction in Chibok a blast ripped through a crowded bus station on the outskirts of Abuja killing 75 people in the deadliest attack to hit the capital. A copycat bombing at the same station killed 19 people on May 1. To contain the violence Jonathan has imposed a state of emergency in Boko Haram's northeast stronghold where he sent thousands of troops to flush out the insurgents but critics say the offensive has achieved almost nothing.
Efforts by prominent northern leaders to negotiate a ceasefire have been publicly rejected by Shekau. Jonathan had hoped that a World Economic Forum summit which opens in Abuja on Wednesday would highlight Nigeria's economic progress and underline its recent emergence as Africa's biggest economy. Meeting Jonathan in Abuja ahead of the summit China's Li pledged stronger cooperation with Nigeria Africa's top oil producer but public focus has remained fixed on Boko Haram. Amid the outrage over the kidnappings and the twin attack just a few kilometers from central Abuja Nigeria has promised the World Economic Forum will be kept safe by the 6000 troops deployed across the capital. "That show of force may keep the delegates safe but Nigeria's deeply troubled government cannot protect its people attract investment and lead the country to its full potential if it cannot contain a virulent insurgency" the New York Times said in an editorial on Wednesday. The release of the video comes as Hamas continues to hold talks with Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah movement on a unity agreement. The PA's Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah has already offered to step down to pave the way for a unity government. The unity government is supposed to be made up of independent figures but a senior Hamas figure said this week that the group's leadership decided to submit a candidate for the presidency. The Rialto Unified School District in California asked 8th graders to write an essay about whether the Holocaust was not actually "merely a political scheme created to influence public emotions and gain wealth."
The district's interim head Mohammad Z. Islam took action to withdraw the assignment as soon as he learned about it spokeswoman Syeda Jafri told AFP.
"When the interim Superintendent and I became aware of this essay from the Educational Services Dept. immediate action was taken to eliminate this writing prompt due to the harsh inaccurate wordage" she wrote in an email quoted by the news agency. "We will begin to continue to teach the importance of the Holocaust with compassion and sensitivity. We deeply regret the pain that this may have caused" she added. The Anti Defamation League a Jewish lobby body slammed the assignment.
"It is ADL's general position that an exercise asking students to question whether the Holocaust happened has no academic value; it only gives legitimacy to the hateful and anti-Semitic promoters of Holocaust Denial" said its regional boss Matthew Friedman in a letter to the district quoted by AFP. "ADL does not have any evidence that the assignment was given as part of a larger insidious agenda. Rather the district seems to have given the assignment with an intent although misguided to meet Common Core standards relating to critical learning skills" added an ADL statement. "ADL has thanked the district for its quick response to this matter and offered further assistance" including teacher training it added. In a statement Monday the schools district said "The intent of the writing prompt was to exercise the use of critical thinking skills. There was no offensive intent in the crafting of this assignment. We regret that the prompt was misinterpreted." "We appreciate the suggestions of the Anti-Defamation League as we have shared goals when it comes to our students and our community" it added.
The apology comes on the same day that Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif defended recent statements he made acknowledging the Holocaust and said he will not let Iran to turned into a security issue by Israel just because Tehran insists on denying the Holocaust. In a session with conservative parliamentarians Zarif said that as long as he is the foreign minister he would not let the country to be portrayed as a security threat by the "Zionist project" through unrealistic Holocaust rejection.
Several Iranian officials have openly denied the Holocaust including its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who recently said "In European countries no one dares to talk about the Holocaust and we do not know if it's real or not." Iran subsequently claimed that CNN had misrepresented Rouhani's statements claiming the network added the words "Holocaust" and "reprehensible" to its translation.

In the midst of the military standoff between Ukraine and Russia the Crimean peninsula's 800 Karaites a religious sect that splintered from Judaism is firmly supporting Russia. The Karaites broke off from Judaism in the 8th or 9th century when they rejected the Oral Law in favor of following their own interpretations of the Torah.
Anna Polkanova a member of the Crimean Karaite community who has studied the group's history clarified to AFP that "we do not define ourselves as Jews."

The former kenassa of Simferopol built in the 1800s was turned into a local television station during the Soviet era when the building's Star of David was replaced with a communist red star. "Look at that the kenassa has not been renovated since it was built" remarked Vladimir Ormeli the president of the Association of Crimean Karaites speaking about the building. Ormeli claims that efforts to gain possession of the Karaite cemetery the two existing Crimean kenassas and the Chufut-Kale fortress that houses one of the kenassas have been opposed by the Ukrainian authorities. For this reason Ormeli says the community is supportive of the newly imposed Russia invasion and annexation. "Most of us are hopeful" Ormeli said claiming that his co-religionists are "closer to Russian rather than Ukrainian culture." Soviet rule reportedly caused the near disappearance of the Karaim language which is closely related to that of the Crimean Tartar Muslim community which was deported from the region in 1944 by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

The organization was allegedly plotting attacks against government facilities and foreign interests according to the report. A statement from the ministry said 62 suspected members of the group were arrested. Among them were three foreigners including a Palestinian Arab a Yemeni and a Pakistani. Among the Saudi detainees there are 35 who had previously been detained on security-related allegations and released the statement said according to Al Arabiya. Members of the organization have "links with extremist elements in Syria and Yemen" it said adding that authorities are still hunting down 44 others whose names have been submitted to Interpol. Interior Ministry Spokesman Major General Mansour al-Turki told reporters in Riyadh that the organization has also made "direct" contact with the Islamist State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) the jihadist rebel organization operating in Syria. The group had been targeting "government and foreign interests" and had planned "wide -scale assassinations" he said according to Al Arabiya. The statement said "suspicious activities on social networks" had facilitated the arrests without providing further details. In a later interview with Al Arabiya al-Turki said terrorist cells in the kingdom are increasingly focused on smuggling operations along the southern border with Yemen. The fight against terrorism has been a top priority in Saudi Arabia. In February the Saudi king decreed jail terms of up to 20 years for belonging to "terrorist groups" and fighting abroad in another attempt to deter Islamist Saudis from becoming jihadists. I will sell them in the Market by Allah!" Breaking into laughter he continues: "There is a market for selling humans. Allah says I should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women!" Boko Haram has been responsible for scores of terrorist atrocities in Nigeria usually against Christian and government targets but also occasionally against Muslim figures who oppose them. The mass-kidnapping which took place in April was not the group's first attack on a school. Just two months previously the group shot and burned to death dozens of students in an attack on a boarding school. In a similar attack in 2013 Boko Haram terrorists murdered 50 students as they slept in their dormitories. In July of that year 29 pupils and a teacher were burned alive in another school. Wed May 7 2014 'US isolated in sanctions on Russia'. 'Ukrainians have right to protest'. We know that a massacre happened in the Ukrainian city of Odessa last week in which more than 40 pro-Russian civilian protesters were killed when a public building they were seeking refuge in was deliberately set ablaze by neo-Nazi supporters of the Western-backed Kiev junta. Apparently the victims died from the blaze or from smoke inhalation or when they jumped from windows to the pavement below. But in the aftermath new shocking images have been published in various reputable Russian media sources that tell a far more harrowing story. Photos show victims lying on the floor of the Trade Union building who were only partially burned with their heads and upper limbs incinerated the rest of their bodies strangely unscarred. Suspiciously in many of the images the surrounding space where the bodies lay bears no evidence of fire damage. Other victims also appeared to have gunshot wounds to their charred heads. And in one particularly disturbing image the body of a pregnant woman is photographed bent over backwards on an office desk. The victim appears to have been garrotted; neither her body nor theoffice where her remains were found shows any signs of fire damage. Russian media report survivor accounts saying that the rooms they were hiding in to escape from the effects of the blaze were broken into by assailants who pretended to be pro-Russian protesters. On entering the offices those inside were attacked by the intruders. This suggests that persons associated with the neo-Nazi crowd outside the building somehow gained entry to the Trade Union building and then systematically set about murdering those inside. When news of the deadly blaze emerged last Friday it struck some observers as strange that so many people could have perished from a fire that was mainly located at the front of the building on the ground floor. The giant multi-storey solid stone structure surely would have given those trapped inside more escape routes or spaces to avoid the effects of deadly fumes. And how do we explain the macabre images of partially incinerated bodies surrounded by seemingly undamaged wooden floors and railings? Or the victims with apparent gunshot wounds to the head and the pregnant woman slumped on the office table? Another vile image shows a woman's body near an elevator door in which her naked lower body is charred but her upper body is clothed indicating that she may have been raped by her attackers before they killed her. The harrowing images suggest that something much more sinister happened than what initial reports conveyed. The initial reports are disturbing enough.

The assessments were given in confidential briefings to a number of congressional committees discussing a law that would lower visa restrictions on Israeli citizens wanting to come to the US. The US visa waiver program would exempt Israeli nationals from having to produce a tourist visa permitting them to stay in the US for a period of up to 90 days. According to a congressional staffer familiar with a briefing last January the testimony was "very sobering…alarming…even terrifying." Another staffer called it "damaging." "No other country close to the United States continues to cross the line on espionage like the Israelis do" said a former congressional staffer who attended another classified briefing in 2013. "I don't think anyone was surprised by these revelations" the former aide said. "But when you step back and hear…that there are no other countries taking advantage of our security relationship the way the Israelis are for espionage purposes it is quite shocking. I mean it shouldn't be lost on anyone that after all the hand-wringing over [Jonathan] Pollard it's still going on." Senior US intelligence officials have reportedly told Congress that Israeli's spying operations are going too far and called the extent of the espionage activities shocking far exceeding similar activities by any other close allies.

Pro-Moscow protesters continue to occupy a number of government police and other administrative buildings in many cities and towns in the region demanding integration into neighboring Russia. Earlier in the day Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said holding a presidential election in Ukraine would be unusual at the time when Kiev has deployed troops against civilians. He also dismissed a European proposal to hold fresh peace talks on Ukraine and labeled it "pointless". On April 23 Ukraine's acting government re-launched its military operation in the eastern and southern regions in a bid to root out the pro-Russia demonstrations. The military operation came despite an April 17 Geneva agreement signed by Kiev's interim government together with the United States Russia and the European Union calling for all sides to ease crisis in eastern Ukraine.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) which was recently in the headlines for the covert creation of a text-based social network to stir political unrest in Cuba has said it will support Ukraine's media financially so that the pro-Western media outlets can cover the planned presidential election in the country.
USAID officials have said they want to add $1.25 million to the more than $10 million already promised by US government agencies to help bring about the expected election.
Russia has opposed the vote saying holding the election during the current violence would be "unusual" and "absurd."

GENEVA — The Vatican revealed Tuesday that over the past decade it has defrocked 848 priests who raped or molested children and sanctioned another 2572 with lesser penalties providing the first ever breakdown of how it handled the more than 3400 cases of abuse reported to the Holy See since 2004.
The Vatican's UN ambassador in Geneva Archbishop Silvano Tomasi released the figures during a second day of grilling by a UN committee monitoring implementation of the UN treaty against torture. Tomasi insisted that the Holy See was only obliged to abide by the torture treaty inside the tiny Vatican City State which has a population of only a few hundred people. But significantly he didn't dispute the committee's contention that sexual violence against children can be considered torture. Legal experts have said that classifying sexual abuse as torture could expose the Catholic Church to a new wave of lawsuits since torture cases in much of the world don't carry statutes of limitations. Tomasi also provided statistics about how the Holy See has adjudicated sex abuse cases for the past decade. The Vatican in 2001 required bishops and religious superiors to forward all credible cases of abuse to Rome for review after determining that they were shuffling pedophile priests from diocese to diocese rather than subjecting them to church trials. Only in 2010 did the Vatican explicitly tell bishops and superiors to also report credible cases to police where local reporting laws require them to.
The Vatican statistics are notable in that they show how the peaks in numbers over the years — both of cases reported and sanctions meted out — roughly parallels the years in which abuse scandals were in the news. And they showed that far from diminishing in recent years the number of cases reported annually to the Vatican has remained a fairly constant 400 or so since 2010 the last year the scandal erupted in public around the globe. The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) provided a video of the incident on Wednesday. The journalists appeared earlier this week on Jordanian TV's current events program "The Two Ways" which airs live and were taking part in a panel on freedom of the press in Arab states when things took an ugly turn. Shaker al-Jawhari who supports the Syrian opposition accused Muhammad al-Jayousi a Baathist who supports Syrian president Bashar Assad of being a "deviant." "A deviant is someone who supports the slaughtering of people" Jawhari explained. "You are the deviant" Jayousi retorted but he was cut short by Jawhari who went on: "A deviant is someone whose views are determined according to benefits…a deviant is someone who jumps from one lap to another depending on who pays more." President Shimon Peres issued an appeal Wednesday for international pressure to coerce Hamas into accepting the Quartet terms and recognizing Israel a move that he said would allow for the resumption of the suspended peace negotiations. In a meeting with United States National Security Advisor Susan Rice Peres insisted "We must find a way to restart the negotiations between us and the Palestinians." The latest insurgent attack targeted the town of Gamboru Ngala on the border with Cameroon where gunmen this week razed scores of buildings and fired on civilians as they tried to flee. Area Senator Ahmed Zanna put the death toll at 300 citing information provided by locals in an account supported by numerous residents.
Zanna said the town had been left unguarded because the soldiers based there had been redeployed north towards Lake Chad in an effort to rescue more than 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram on April 14. The shocking mass abduction has sparked global outrage and offers of help from the United States Britain France and China. Nigeria's response to the kidnappings has been widely criticized including by activists and parents of the hostages who say the military's search operation has been inept so far. The police on Monday offered 50 million naira ($300000) for any information leading to the girls' rescue. President Goodluck Jonathan's administration has sought to appear more engaged with the plight of the hostages in recent days especially after Boko Haram chief Abubakar Shekau released a video threatening to sell the girls as "slaves."
In a second kidnapping eleven more girls aged 12 to 15 years were seized Sunday from Gwoza an area not far from Chibok and also in Borno state Boko Haram's base.
The group's five-year uprising has killed thousands across Africa's most populous country and top economy with many questioning whether Nigeria has the capacity to contain the violence. Islamist fighters riding in armored trucks and on motorcycles stormed Gamboru Ngala after midday on Monday. Survivors said the extremists overran the town making it too dangerous for locals to immediately return. When the Islamists left residents went back to a town that was "littered" with dead bodies Musa Abba a witness told AFP. "All economic and business centers have been burnt. The market in the town which attracts traders from all over the area… has been completely burnt" the senator said. Gamboru Ngala has been attacked repeatedly in the past but Abba said "this (was) the worst Boko Haram attack (the town) has seen." US President Barack Obama has described the Chibok abductions as "heartbreaking" and "outrageous" and announced that a team of military experts had been sent to help Nigeria's rescue mission. British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday condemned the kidnappers as "pure evil" as his office said Britain was sending a team of experts to help with the kidnap response. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said a "special team" was at Nigeria's disposal while Jonathan said that visiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has also pledged assistance. Analysts said Jonathan's acceptance of Western military assistance suggested an admission he can no longer manage the Boko Haram uprising without help. As well as mounting pressure over the kidnappings Nigeria has been hit by a spate of bombings. Just a few hours before the mass abduction in Chibok a blast ripped through a crowded bus station on the outskirts of Abuja killing 75 people in the deadliest attack to hit the capital. A copycat bombing at the same station killed 19 people on May 1. To contain the violence Jonathan has imposed a state of emergency in Boko Haram's northeast stronghold where he sent thousands of troops to flush out the insurgents but critics say the offensive has achieved almost nothing.
Efforts by prominent northern leaders to negotiate a ceasefire have been publicly rejected by Shekau. Jonathan had hoped that a World Economic Forum summit which opens in Abuja on Wednesday would highlight Nigeria's economic progress and underline its recent emergence as Africa's biggest economy. Meeting Jonathan in Abuja ahead of the summit China's Li pledged stronger cooperation with Nigeria Africa's top oil producer but public focus has remained fixed on Boko Haram. Amid the outrage over the kidnappings and the twin attack just a few kilometers from central Abuja Nigeria has promised the World Economic Forum will be kept safe by the 6000 troops deployed across the capital. L'Unione europea non esclude lo svolgimento di una seconda riunione a Ginevra sulla crisi in Ucraina lo ha detto mercoledì il capo del Consiglio europeo Herman Van Rompuy in una conferenza stampa a Bruxelles. A Ginevra il 17 aprile la Russia gli Stati Uniti l'Unione europea e l'Ucraina avevano concordato misure di de-escalation del conflitto: il disarmo dei gruppi armati illegali il rilascio degli immobili occupati abusivamente e l'avvio di un dialogo nazionale vertente sulla riforma costituzionale federativa.

Secondo il diplomatico "La NATO preferisce far finta di non sentire gli appelli di febbraio che chiedevano alle forze armate ucraine di rimanere neutrali e di non essere impiegate contro il proprio stesso popolo. " Inoltre Grushko ha ricordato che l'alleanza continua a fornire un sempre più maggiore sostegno al programma di cooperazione con Kiev la commissione NATO-Ucraina.
